Ok, my friend is trying to remove the drum brakes from his 67. It is his first car that he is workign on, so he is new at everything. They rotate, but he cannot get the to coem off. Anyone know of any tricks that can loosen them up?

Pull off the dust cap and rotate the self adjuster wheel. In addition, using a soft faced hammer, tap the drum as you rotate it and pull. Usually takes two people. After removal, have them turned to eliminate the lip.

Ford also had some clips on two or three of the lugs, those come off, they put those on the drums while assembling so the drum didnt fall off and smash the worker's toes. I don't know how well those hold the brake on though...

Fronts; remove the dust cap, pull cotter pin and unscrew castle nut. Rears; unscrew flat metal hold-on thing from wheel stud.
Now if you've done this and they still won't come off then chances are your brakes have worn into the drum and there is now a lip on the drum holding it against the brake shoes. You'll need to back off on the adjustment of the brakes to collapse them enough to get the drums off. Remove the small oblong rubber adjusting cover from the backing plate. You'll need a thin screwdriver to slide into the adjusting hole to push against the self-adjuster arm to take the pressure off the starwheel. While holding the self-adjuster arm off the starwheel, use a brake adjuster tool to screw the starwheel so it collapses. I believe it's a downward motion on the starwheel to cllapse it. Go several turns and then grip the drum with two hands and try to pull and unscrew at the same time (if still stuck, collase the adjuster some more). If these instructions were confusing, check out a drum brake diagram for reference before you begin. Good luck, done this plenty of times myself and its a bit of a pain fumbling around the small adjuster hole with two tools but it'll work out.
