Hi all--

I have it on good authority that Santa is going to bring me a new stereo for my 66 GT. Presenetly, the stereo is in the glove box and a non functioning AM is in the dash. Any other places that I could put the head unit? Mostly, I just use it to play my iPod.

What is a good, low-end type that you advise? I have a Sony now and I'm feeling so-so about it. I've seen a few Blaupunkts and Alpines that I like.

So, let's hear how you got modern stereo tunes in your vintage iron.

Thanks!

I'll leave this one for the other guys, as I rarely listen to the Customautocrap thing in my dash. I think most people do the glovebox mount like yours.

I would stick with the glove box setup, and get a head unit with a remote. My buddy has a 65 GT vert with that setup and the remote works through the closed glove box door. Not sure of the brand or model, but I'm sure it's nothing exotic.

Since he hasn't posted on this yet...........Mber has a Blaupunkt MP3/CD player installed in his glovebox. It has a detachable face which he made a patch cable for so that he could have the face within reach on the console. It's a pretty slick set up and you don't have to open the glove box door to change stations or CD tracks.

There was someone in Norway, Sweden, somewhere cold, that did almost that exact thing. I had thought I bookmarked his site (with how to), but can't find it. After reading his "how to" on making an extension cable for the removable face I thought how easy it would be to make an adapter that would mount where the stock radio was. That way people that don't want to cut the dash can just sort of reverse mount the adapter into the **** holes.

I just cut the dash and installed a Pioneer CD/head unit and 4 speakers (2 kick panel, 2 package tray). My stereo is loud enough for me to hear over my exhaust while not trying to be the club dj for the nearest 100 cars to me.

Yes, I copied the guy you mentioned. I don't have his link either, but you basically start with a removable faceplate stereo, and solder a cable to the two sets of contacts, making a wired remote. Note: I did have to put a switch to electrically disconnect the faceplate so I could eject CDs.

Remote is now on a velcro bracket under the AC. I can quickly hide it under the dash if I have any Proctologists inspecting the car.

How did you get the glove box to support that stereo? I have mine in a plastic "sleeve" that takes up most of the glove box. That is MUCH cleaner than my setup.

It's just attached to the top of the new reproduction box liner. It's quite solid.

I think I've decided to go with a low-end Alpine. Any tricks to installing this puppy? I need to yank out the POS Sony that's in there. . . .

No that's Hakån's site. I know exactly what link y'all are talkin' about though. I had it bookmarked long ago, but I can't seem to find it.

Just another fine example of how easily I wore out my welcome at that other site I guess. :notnice: I'm just glad I can still contribute to the hobby somewhere.

Oh I'm always lurking bud, at least once or twice a week anyway until it grows more. I may have my flaws but helping is always my first course of business.
