Wondering if the '66 Shelby stripes were originally decals on the hood/roof/trunk. I assume the ones along the rocker panel were. When most people repaint for the "Shelby look", do they use decals ?

I just searched through Mustangs Unlimited's selection and while they have the rocker panel decal kits, they do not have any Shelby hood stripe decal kits for any model year. This leads me to believe that the stripes were painted on.

The original Shelby stripes were painted on. I think SAAC's website has the actual width's used.

I think mr-mstng is right. All the ones I have seen were painted.

I think the dimensions are 9 1/2" at the front of the hood and 10" at the windshield. Of course I could be wrong about the exact size of the stripes but I think im close.

Yes, they were painted. There is a complicated measurement system to use as the stripes are nowhere near uniform in width. They taper and flare like crazy supposedly because there is an optical illusion that makes them look out of whack when they are the exact same width the length of the car. I believe Tony Branda has the specs on the stripes.

66 stripes got often painted on by Shelby dealers, as the 64 something dollar option ex-factory was saved quite often, so many paint schemes and used paint mixtures vary a lot (in original condition).
(acc. to Branda catalogue)

They were painted on, and if you'd like the measurements, dig into a mustangs unlimited catalog. In there they have the exact mesurements. I have a cut out from the catalog at my buddy's house. We're painting my 66 right now, and I am doing the stripes tapered like that. If you want the measurements, I'll post them on here next week. Just let me know.

The Lemans stripes are painted on, and vary in width. HERE'S the dimensions.

65 rocker stripes were painted, with decals for the letters. 66-up rocker stripes were decals.

Hijack...

Hey Bob! Good to see ya 'round here. Great place to hang out, especially if you are considering an 05 GT to clone up to match Cloney.
