*UPDATE*

I managed to get a little bit done yesterday. Actually this process took about 4 hours to complete. It wouldn't have if I hadn't screwed up when cutting the new piece though. I had to make a small patch to fill the gap.

Got the new cowl panel fitted, welded in and the welds ground.

Then covered the whole thing with Zero Rust. I'll put on another coat then apply seam sealer to the welds and around the hats.

Didn't you do the same thing on the quarter patch?

Looks good. You should be proud.

It's September, are you ready for paint?

No. It was the trunk floor and I didn't cut the wrong piece. Just didn't have it postioned exactly right and marked it wrong. :bang:

Does it look like I'm ready for paint, punk? I think this is the last of the rust replacement though. I need to finish the other cowl patch and put in my apron extensions and rear bumper brace. Those last 2 shouldn't be difficult at all then I'll finish my body work. I have some of it started already so it isn't like I still have all of it to do.

Looks great. Don't forget to drill the hole for the wiper arm pivot.

Time for an update on As the Welder Burns

Made some good progress. I got the old piece out on the passenger side without much trouble and no doofus.

Ground all the edges and fitted the new panel.

Punched all the holes and clamped the new piece in.

Everything went pretty easy. I had a gap where the new meets old but I used a brass backer and filled the gap with weld.

Ground down all the welds, cleaned the panel with laquer thinner to remove the oil that is put on it from the manufacturer to prevent rusting then covered it with Zero Rust.

On the suggestion of some other people, I bought some "sealer" from Lowe's for my seams but I don't think I got the right one. I was told to get some that is recommended for gutters. What I got was for roof flashing.

It was still really gooey after being on for 2 hours so I'm not sure if it is going to cure any more or not. If not then I'll clean it off with lacquer thinner and get something different.

Next up........finishing the seal sealing and coating the middle section of the lower cowl and underside of the top with Zero Rust then re-welding the top down. All 130 spot welds.......

Looks Good. I like the signature. Just like Carrol Shelby!

Make sure any seam sealer you use is paintable. It will say that on the tube.

Good work Josh! The sig is a great idea. When I was working on my inner fenders, I got seam sealer from the local AutoZone. It came in a tube like that, was easy to apply, and probably was cured after two hours or so. Its a light grey in color.

I checked the sealer this morning and it is still a little tacky but not gooey like yesterday. I think I may go look at some other ones instead of using this. I just don't like the way it is turning out and I don't think it is paintable.

Eric, $150 just like ole CS.
