Tonight I took a 30 min. drive just before sunset was a great time!! I stopped a couple of times during my trip. Just wondering about starting the car after my stops. Once in awhile after the car has been running for a bit I can turn the key and she fires right up. Other times like tonight it doesn't fire right up, and I have to give her some gas to get going. Wondering if this is just something normal with an older car, or if something isn't quite right

 

yea its normal man happens to me too....it usually fires right up without the gas because theres still some gas fumes in the combustion chamber.....thats my .02 cents

lol my car hates the cold weather she bogs and stalls when its cold out...now that the weather is nice she runs like a dream

 

Also, the down time between stops can have a factor in that. The starters get heat soaked pretty easily, particularly if you are running headers. So say you just run in and out of the store it would likely be harder to start then if you say took 15 or 20 minutes to shop and then restarted it. Also, the choke can affect things. As my car is a summer car only I have the choke comepletely disconnected becasue my cold start is about the same with it or wihout it but my hot start is horrible with it.

Big D is right too, it is normal and without EFI the car does require gas to start and so you could actually give it too much when hot and flood it. I have found that in general (all cars are different) a cold start seems to catch best with about one foot pump of the pedal followed by holding it half way and turning the key. As you have probably noticed sometimes it requires even playing with the gas a few seconds so it does not stall out. A Hot start, again in general, will likely prefer that you only hold the pedal half way and do not pump it at all first to avoid flooding it.

I would suggest that you try these various methods with and without the choke and see what situation your cars reacts to best and consistently. One thing you should always observe though, if you do not succesfully start your car right away, do not keep cranking it and let your starter recoup for a good 30 seconds or so before trying again otherwise you can shorten its life significantly.

Yesterday when we went to get the new plates on whjile she was running we put the top down and my dad needed the keys to open the trunk then i started it agaion without touching the gas....lol i guess it has a mind of its own lol
