Poor low RPM running
Hi guys, hope you can give me some rough pointers.
I have a 1965 C Code 289, converted with a Edelbrock Performer 500cfm carb; not looked at the guts of the motor, but it is standard ignition with a fairly hot cam (and the carb)
These are the basic symptoms:
*V jerky running when cruising at 1500 to 2500 rpm ; it is running on unleaded with additive (giving an octane rating of 99) and is fine when accelerating.
*Tickover is slightly lumpy (due to cam), but on the high side (over 1000)
*Starting after only a day takes ages
I either have to drive with the clutch in slightly, rev it over 2500rpm if I'm driving in 1st or 2nd (the low gearing accentuates the kangaroo affect), or keep accelerating and deccelerating to stop the car from jerking badly. It just won't 'tootle' along.
The guy who imported it into the UK said that its no shopping car, due to the cam (not been able to check the cam spec yet)
Is that a fair comment or are there any other possible causes to investigate before pulling the cam for something milder.
I know this could be a million and one things, but if there are any simple ones to check first I'll do that.
Thanks guys
Simon
