So, I am pretty sure that I want to get a 65-66 fastback and have some fun. I want a car that is in pretty good shape, but not something that has been completely redone already. I want to do some of the work myself and then some at a local shop or something where I can keep dibs on things.

The problem is most of the cars I find are either already done, or the "project car" is two steps from the grave, or too big a project for me.

So, I was wondering if you guys could help me out w/good places to start looking (closer to the Houston area the better); good books or other resources on the process or any other general info you may feel would be helpful.

Thanks in advance!

ebay is always so tempting, but I have had 3 friends all have REAL bad experiences w/cars and ebay...so I am little scared, but it may come to that.

I think your best bet is to scour your surounding areas for a car that has been sitting on driveways or a garage waiting to be restored by a owner that will never get around to it. That is where the deals are, ebay is overpriced most of the time.

Your search will not be easy...ofcourse that depends on your budget. Fastbacks are tough to find and command high prices for what you are describing. I've seen absolute junk(basically a good roof) sell for $1500 or more. Your best bet is the sunday drive route where you hope to find one as described above sitting in a driveway but be prepared to spend some money....they are not cheap for the condition you describe.

Our 65 sat in a garage for 10 years before we found her. They rebuilt tranny before they put her up. It was bad from sitting and we had to have it rebuilt. Another problem- the coolant turned to concrete! Be careful! Try John's Mustang in Houston for parts. They also have a binder/folder on counter with Stangs for sale. I think a body shop is next door w/classic Stangs. Mustang Mania in Katy is good and they are friendly. Good luck with finding your car, I know you will love her!

Where are you located?

I have several consignment places bookmarked for places along the west coast ... if you like I can place them here. I got mine from Highway One south of San Francisco in exact same condition you describe ... it runs, good driver and perfect for some upgrades.

here are some links

http://www.specialtysales.com/ << been to
http://www.myhotcars.com/ << been to
http://www.fastlanecars.com/
http://www.carscene.net/ << been to
http://www.memorylanemotors.net/
http://www.volocars.com/showroom.html << on the expensive side
http://www.highwayone.com/ << got my mach 1 from

most of these places are serious car vendors and are always searching the whole country for them. They can also make arrangements.

ALSO .. email or call them because web inventories are always lagging; my Mach 1 is still listed

good luck

Well I was in your shoes over the past 5 years or so. Actually the last year and a half more seriously looking around for the same vehicle. The problem is that the longer I waited the more the prices seemed to go up.
As hard as it was to do I actually purchased one off of EBay in the Katy area. I live on the south side of Houston in Alvin. The motor needs a little work...nothing major. Trans is in good shape. Only one small spot of rust on the passenger door. Some electrical issues too but overall I have a great starting place. I drove it home for 11,200. Everything I've seen in that price range needed a lot more work. Im having fun tinkering and replacing stuff.
Here she is. Good luck in your search. Tony

:bang: You really have to just keep your eyes peeled at all times, i am interested in a fastback my grandmother's neighbor has, it looks rough but i hope to pick it up cheap, it just sits outside crying, "restore me, restore me please!"
