Paint Job for a 65 Mustang
Paint Job for a 65 Mustang
I just called the local Maaco shop and they said they can soda blast all the way down to bare metal, and paint my 65 in the original Rangoon Red for about $2300. Sounds like a pretty good deal. I might go by there on Monday to check it out. What do you guys think?
Here's a pic of a guy who got his Mustang Painted there. It looked pretty good. They said they use DuPont paint.
Here's a link to a Mustang painted in the color I want. Rangoon Red.

Usually Maaco scares me,
If your local shop has done a car that you can look closely at and you like it...OK
Make sure that the exact same technician paints your car.
Every shop is different. Every tech has his own standards.

My 89 so far is up to 4k and the guy is doing me a favor charging me very little for supplies and labor. Maybe expensive, but the end result and the workmansship is well worth the money. I recommend not throwing your money away, so you might want to reconsider. Check some of their cars during the week, the door jambs around the trunk, hood, and other panel gaps. You will probably find spots of running paint and mismatched colors or thickness of paint.
My best friend is a great painter. He is the one that painted my 95. I just will never trust Maaco. More power to ya if you do. I'd rather pay a little more for what I know will be great work.
Yes, perhaps you guys are right. I've reconsidered since I opened this thread this morning. Going out at lunch in it, I relized that the paint job on my car really isn't that bad. Not really bad enough to have to have it painted right now. I have other things I have to pay for right now.
Actually, I was thinking that maybe I could just have a coat or two of clear coat sprayed on it? Maybe even have a tinted clear coat sprayed on it to maybe make it a little reder in color?
What do you guys think? Have you ever heard of anybody doing something like that?

I took my 65 into MAACO yesterday to get a complete repaint, and some minor body work. My friend just got his 66 El Camino painted there and I went down and had a close look at it. It looked real good to me.
This local MAACO has a guy there that has extensive Mustang experience and I'm hoping that I'll get a decent paint job there.
I also found this review from a year ago about the local Maaco in West Fort Worth where my car is being painted. The guy had a 66 Mustang.
I just picked up my Car on Friday , July 19 2009. I brought in my 66 mustang for an appraisal. Sherry, who is very kind and patient worked with me to help give a proper estimate of the work to be done. They also brought one of the other people out to look at it and to make sure everything I wanted could be done with possible return trips. I know there is a stigma about Maaco and the paint job they do but the quality of service I recieved from Maaco was superior to even Mustang Restore shops. I got to watch my car start to finish, I checked in on it almost each day and found out there is a very knowledgeable body man at this location who has worked on classics-especially mustangs for 30 years. He lead me around my Mustang showed me what it was missing and even let me know (by sound) that one of my valves was to tight which has nothing to do with body work but he was 100% correct. Also they spent more time on my car then what I paid for and I will rate this company 10 stars if I could.

Well, that sounds interesting! That's similar to what I was thinking about doing. But I want to go back to the orginal "Rangoon Red."
Are you going to keep the current orange paint as a base coat, or are you going to go all the way down to bare metal?
I saw a 65 Mustang about a year ago at a car show we had here at work. It looked like he had put on a clear coat that was tinted red. Maybe thats what the orginal "Poopy Red" looked like?
I couldn't find the owner to ask him. I probably should have written down his name so I could look him up later, but I didn't think of it at the time. I took a pic of it, but my Iphone changed the color just enough so it looked just like another orange Mustang.
Be sure and give us lots of pics after you get yours painted. I would likke to see it!

I am doing an orange pearl clearcoat over the orange paint for some sparkle, pearl finishes come in a varitiy of colors. Order goes: paint, pearl, clear coat... and sand and buff inbetween each coat. Also doing a gold pearl set of stripes, kinda of a ghost stripe, visiable from one angle and not another. This is all on my 66 coupe.

I just sanded it smooth, waiting for it to be primered then painting. As I sanded found areas like rings on a tree. In some areas I hit primer and other areas hit other colors. as said in other threads, previous owners tried to restore but failed. At the moment still under my $10k limit, but will go over that with the paint and some engine work.
So to answer your question, no not to bare metal but down enough to look good with a fresh coat of paint.
