I have the opportunity to purchase a 1967 restmod. The asking price is $19,450. It is originally a C Code, but has a 4 speed 428 interceptor in it now. I have been looking at 302 and 390 cars, but this one seems fairly inexpensive compared to what I've been seeing. The paint and interior look like new. I have attached a link at the bottom of the page.

I guess since I am fairly new at this (i only just decided that i wanted to buy a 67 or 68 fastback over the summer) I am looking for some opinions on this car. I understand it's not a numbers matching show car, but it looks like i might be able to have some fun with it, maybe do a shelby/eleanor clone.

If anyone could let me know if the price is fair, what the reputation of the 428 Interceptor engine is, and what possible projects and changes (bullitt or eleanor clone?) I could do with the car, I'd really appreciate it.

I hate looking at cars and giving opinions online, but that does not look like $19k to me. It needs paint and body work and the suspension/steering looks like it needs replacing. You could start with a less road worthy car and come out ahead with the same amount of $ and work.

 

Other than the high-back buckets, what about this car is restomodded? Looks like freshly sprayed black paint on that belly. Kinda throws up a red flag to me. And for close to $20 large, I would expect some kind of cross-over on that exhaust - not that that's an expensive add-on - but for that kinda money, I wouldn't expect to do a thing to it! I say keep looking unless the seller comes down several thousand dollars.

 

PASS! No way is that heap worth $19k. I see faded paint, fresh paint on the undercarriage (probably to hide the dirt from the looks of the spots they didn't spray), worn/dirt covered suspension and a heck of a pinion seal leak on that rear end. Dan is right, for that kind of dough I'd expect something I didn't have to touch.

 

Yeah, I'd agree with the other guys. Looks like the shop picked up a cheap vehicle, sprayed a fresh coat of paint and did some minor cosmetic work on the interior and engine bay. Now, for not much spent on their end, they're attempting to flip the car. A classic sleazebag scheme. Walk away from it.

Fresh paint is always a flag. I can't believe that a shop would ask for that kind of coin and leave bits of dirt and garbage on the carpet! If they won't vaccuum it out before the try to sell it, what else didn't they do?

I agree--You can start with a diff. car and build it the way you want it. Find one with faded paint--you'll want to paint it anyway--and solid body/cowl/such. Faded paint rarely hides much. (If there is rust there, you'll see it.) The main thing is to avoid body rot. You'll be chasing that forever.

Run, don't walk, from this car.

Or, offer them 10 grand and see what they do.

Patience is the key here. Mustangs are all over. Don't get in a rush and pull the trigger on the first one you see.

Faded carpet in the interior, the paint in the engine carpet was obviously just shot over the existing peeling paint with no prep, and an exposed flywheel.

In addition to everything else already mentioned, all of which is very easily fixed and/or done correctly. If they failed to do that properly, I'd have major questions regarding the car before even getting into a serious inspection.

Not worth it.

Everyone, thanks for getting back to me on this. I thought that quick paint job looked a bit suspect, but it's good to hear that everyone else agrees with me. I've been looking at mustangs for about six months now, so i understand that I have to be patient. I also use these forums to read and learn about mustangs, since my education on them is somewhat limited. For that reason, I like to post possible buys on here to get people's opinions. I thank everybody.

Since it doesn't look like I will be pursuing the 428 any further (and also not looking at anything from that garage again!) I found a J Code in south carolina. The link is below. they want 28k for it, but it looks like it's in great condition and I'd probably offer them a little less. What do you guys think about this one? Possible work to be done on the car? Anyone know this place Oswalt's? Let me know.

I'm no expert, but the second car looks at least as overpriced as the first one. They go to the trouble of powdercoating the intake manifold and valve covers (though God knows why), yet there is obvious rust on the radiator, heads, and vacuum advance canister. No A/C, no P/S, no disc brakes. Then they top it off with that miniature air cleaner that certainly chokes off any potential advantage offered by the cam/carb/headers. And of course there is the obligatory picture of the back seat that no one had time to run a damp cloth over to wipe off the dirt. Most of the cars I've seen that are sold by shops seem to be like this, though. The cars look good from 30 feet away. I looked at another car on the same site-the 69 fastback CJ 428 now powered by a 390. What kind of BS is that? Who is going to be impressed with the fact that 35 years ago it had a 428? I realize that they are two completely different markets, but for that kind of money I would certainly rather have an '05.

 

Pass on this one, too. Get a copy of Hemmings Motor News and buy your car from a person, not a garage. You'll get a better car and a better price.

 

No offense intended - but I think you're looking in the wrong places!

That black fastback looks like it's priced twice what it's worth. At a quick glance I see the radio and various ***** missing, scratches from the fold-down seat, rust on the engine block and radiator. Small things, yes - but if the car were truly restored, they would not have been missed.

Have you tried looking on eBay? I used to think the cars listed there were over-priced - but not so much any more! You should find a nice, presentable (some might argue "restored") 67/68 fastback for between $12,000 and $15,000.

 

Again, it seems terribly overpriced. For that kind of money, I'd expect something *very* original if it wasn't numbers matching, which this isn't. Also, the backseat looks like crap--where else has the owner cut corners? Like was said earlier (and even moreso at 29K), for this much cash nothing should require repair.

EDIT: Great advice from Paul:

 

Stay away from anything that says it is restored fully, and still has plenty of rust; what are the chances any restoration was done considering rust is still very evident. Just be real careful.
