not a mustang Q but...

I know this isnt a Q for classic stangs, but it feels like i'll get more help and traffic here than in the classic ford section under other fords

My friend Brian has a '69 Galaxie 500 coupe with a non working fuel guage. I have no idea how a fuel guage works, but i figured it would have some wires running to it at the very least. We couldnt find anything connected to it at all when we were opening up the instrument cluster

does anyone know/care to explain how they work for us? and possibly help us find the problem in his car? Hes' run out of fuel a few times now, and its not safe to keep it how it is, especially since we want to take it to hot august nights in the summer, (not to show, but just bec its the coolest car to take that will fit us all comfortably )

So if anyone has some insight, it'd be greatly appreciated

. . .

I stumbled across this, but it's from 1965. Maybe it will help. Fuel gauge is in first link.

Well, more often for myself- the sending unit is usually the culprit (of course, the harder piece to replace with the gas tank and all). I havent yet come across a bad guage. Also check the wire going up to the sending unit. I dont beleive that galaxie has a drop-in gas tank like the classic stang, but it should have good contact (for grounding) to the rest of the car.

We are now for sure certain that the gauge is hooked up to nothing at all

Wonderful. I'm not sure what else Brian has discovered or figured out yet (we've been doing this all online since I got back to stockton) but hopefully we can figure out how to make this nonsense work
