Sometimes I get confused . .

Muscle Car = Mid-Full Size car with Big Motor (GTO, Torino Cobra, Chevelle, etc.)

Pony Car = Mid Size car with Med-Big Motor (Mustang, Camaro, 'Cuda, Javelin, etc.)

That is how I have always classified the two in my head . . have I been lying to myself?

Looks like so far I am the only vote for pony car. Kinda surprises me really. A well done pony car offers everything a muscle car does, with the exception of rear seat room, plus on occasion better styling and handling. Sounds like a good trade to me.

I mean, don't get me wrong....I love muscle car styling. However, I think on occasion the best of the pony cars have shown more character and class in their styling than muscle cars did. The two that come to mind right away are the 67-68 Mustang fastbacks (especially the Shelby's) and the late sixties/early seventies Cuda's.

Th fact that with the right options both of those cars, in their "baddest versions" have topped 200,000 dollars at auction makes a good case that at least some hardcore enthusiasts agree with me too. So come and vote already!

I went with Pony car, pretty much agreeing with Evil Capri's definition of the two terms. The Mustang was in fact conceived to be quite in contrast and opposition to the powerful but oafish muscle cars of its day, being a light, nimble and stylish counterpart to the big, clumsy and garish muscle cars.

Some versions of the Stang have come close in character to being a muscle car, specifically some of the old big-block Stangs, but I'd consider them more muscular pony cars than really muscle cars. Maybe draft horse cars?

It's both. Thats what makes the Mustang so popular, you can have it your way. (just like McDonald's)

A muscle car is a pony car...(a pony car is a two door sports car with a rear seat) a muscle car is a pony car with alot of MUSCLE like most mustangs in my opinion but to some it would be the BOSS mustangs and the SHELBY's..ECT... the GTO judge, ,SS Chevelle, the hemis...where PONY cars eventhough they also were MUSCLE cars
SO thats why my vote has to be BOTH

NO and CAPITALIZING won't HELP your POINT.

Look at the definition of a Pony Car.

Look at how Muscle Cars look.

They aren't the same.

Another big difference is the V8-only class that Muscle Cars had. You could get a Mustang, Camaro, Barracuda, etc. with a six-banger. In fact, unless you specified otherwise, that was what you got. The Mustang was not built in the same ideological vein as, say, the GTO (since they were at a similar time). The GTO was made to be a screamer, the Mustang was built to be a "sporty" (I hate that $%&#ing word) coupe that had sports car proportions with the long hood and short rear decklid. Muscle Cars had full proportions, with large trunk spaces.

The only Mustangs that I'd call Muscle Cars would be the Boss 429 and the 428CJ-equipped Mach 1.

I would like to say that the first few years of the Mustang seemed to fit the pony car name. When 68 to 69 rolled around and Ford started putting bigger engines in the car and started making the car look beefer it became a Muscle CAR Boss, MACH and what have you. :worship: .

Today in the RICE age :geek: other than the Vette it's the last muscle car still alive. At least thats the way I have always seen it. But to each his own I guess.

Kotzenjunge... you are right about one thing not all mustangs were muscle cars but all mustangs were pony cars... i wasn't trying to say all pony cars were muscle cars the point i was making was that all muscle cars were pony cars (i hope that is not too confusing) not the other way around

inline 6 mustang... pony car

429 Boss.....Muscle car......but also still a pony car!

It's both. B)

Check out this website link:
Muscle Car Defined

Well, some Mustangs are both - that's what I have always believed, so I guess this kinda supports shibbiestangs point.

With the exception of the Big Blocks(ex, Boss 429 and CJs) a mustang is a pony. Small Block V-8 or 6.The biggest thing is the body size. Chevelles and Galaxies and GTO are bigger with full sized rear seats. A Corvette is sports car(By old deffenitions) expensive and a 2 seat. While a muscle car would be what a father might by his son if he's Graudations son. (Makeing the new GTO more of a sports car)
As for my personal preference i like ponies. A muscle car is more for quarter mile sprints because of the weight distrubition while a pony will prolly be able to out turn on curvy roads.

The mustang was originally a pony car with a few notable exceptions, but I think that, with the near-extinction of muscle cars through the seventies, the pony car (Mustang/Camaro/Firebird/etc.) have partially filled the niche that was once occupied by the muscle car. Therefore I voted for both.
