modernizing a vintage stang.....

hey folks,
my old man has a 68 fastback that we restored a few years ago, bringing from the brink of the crusher (was a total rust bucket with a caved-in roof) to a shining beautiful car.

It wasn't a special edition mustang originally, just a basic 3-spd manual w/ a 289 v8. Most of our money and effort went into just bringing the body back to solid like-new status.

we're now thinking of ways to make it more driver-friendly, and more of a modern-highway friendly car. Now it's a pretty archaic vehicle compared to todays standards, and we don't expect to bring up to that, but I'd like to hear your thoughts and ideas on how to improve the following areas, to make the car more enjoyable to drive, so that we might be able to take it to a car show further than 20 miles and feel confident about it

Steering
suspension
transmission
brakes? (did the II disc conversion during restoration)
engine (upgrades to 289, or swap to something else?)
other? something we're not thinking of?

when we restored the car we made it the way we liked it, rather than adhering to any original designs or cloning designs (ie we used the shelby spoiler, but kept the original tail lights, no side scoops, 67 hood w/ turn signals)... so we're not worried about retaining resale value with mods or not. it's our car and will be for a long time.

*EDIT*
I checked out the 'official FAQ' sticky, and the links in there just take me to the forum homepage. not sure what I'm doin wrong to access those.....

I appreciate everyone's feedback, thanks in advance.

Totally for a resto-rod approach. Take the best of what today has to offer in terms of technology/performance and marry it with classic good looks! IMO, that's the way to go since originality is not an issue. Definitely look into a more modern transmission (T5 or similar w/OD) for a highway-friendly car.

Yeah...I've been on them about the FAQ Thread.....it doesnt work anymore. It will all depend on your budget....you can do all kinds of stuff to theses cars anymore.,...all it takes is money.

Rack and pinion steering
Coil-over suspensions
T-5 or AOD transmissions
Fuel injection
stereos
Fuel cells (safety)
4 wheel disk brakes (tons of setups)
HID head lamps
cruise control
power windows

the list goes on and on...Good luck with your build!
