McQueen Family Authorizes Official 1968 Bullitt Replicas
The family of the late Steve McQueen is celebrating the 40th anniversary of The King of Cool's most famous work by authorizing official replicas of the Mustang driven by McQueen as Detective Lieutenant Frank Bullitt in 1968's Bullitt.
Bullitt, in a Highland Green 1968 Mustang GT 390 Fastback, persues hitmen in a Tuxedo Black 1968 Dodge Charger R/T 440 Magnum through the streets of San Francisco in a sequence that redefined cinematic chase scenes.
Ford honored the Mustang's role in the movie by creating Bullitt edition Mustangs in 2001 and 2008. Last year, Bullitt was selected for preservation in the Library of Congress' National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
Production and availability information are not yet available.
The McQueen Family and Warner Bros. share ownership of the Bullitt name.

this is just a guess,
perhaps whoever it is that is doing the replica 68 hg ford mustang gt needs the permission in order to label it a bullitt replica. not just to do a replica 68 hg mustang gt, but one labelled a 'bullitt' mustang, because the mcqueen family has controll/rights to the bullitt name.
its the same as for ford needing permission to call the present day bullitt mustang a bullitt mustang.
just a guess.

Damnit, I was about to pull the trigger on my 67 project. I'll wait until the release to see what this pans out to be. I'm interested but I don't think they'll be able to keep it at a reasonable price point. For $50k you can buy an original show quality 68 s-code. I'd love to see some modern handling improvements and upgraded interior, but I'm not going to pay $100k for any mustang, let alone a repro.

Does this mean it will be nigh-on impossible to just find a regular, Ford built fasback with no shelby/foose/unique/bullitt stuff on it?
Ack- the "special" editions aren't all that special anymore...

Whatever they do I hope it stays true to the origial and doesn't have 18"-20" wheels, low profile tires, lowered suspension, stupid body kits, or some goofy emblem on the car. I'll keep my judgement to myself until we get more info.

If it did have all that stuff, then it wouldn't be a replica now would it. I doubt it'll be any Chip Foose/West Coast Customs creation.
