Looking for some advice from more knowledgeable people than me

Hi, I just bought a 65 with a 302, c4, i think its a 9" rear. She runs and drives great. But i'm not a mustang expert, YET...lol So I'm just going to throw a bunch of pictures out and let you experts see what you see. If you see something unique, out of sorts, bad, or just plain cool, let me know.

Thanks for looking and participating....
Joe

sorry its upside down...lol

Probably an 8" rear end. It doesn't have the "bulge" that a 9" has. Maybe an 8.8", that I do not know. But otherwise, pretty sweet ride. Welcome!!!

where's the air cleaner? What size are those rear tires? You are missing a bolt or 3 and a cover in the flywheel picture. I would like to see a better picture of the passengers side of the carb. Also a straight on front end shot from like 15/20 feet away. Car look great by the way

I agree with the transmission cover, that shouldn't be exposed. Hopefully you took the air cleaner off to take pictures too

Do you know if an 8 or 8.8 was a stock rear...does it matter with a 302 and a c4?

Thanks for the compliments... I was looking for a stang for some time and couldnt let this one go...

Yup I took the air cleaner off for the pictures...it is a standard round chrome cleaner. The header is a edlebrock proformer 289 and a edlebrock 1406 carb is on it with an electric choke. Seems to work well, she fires right up and rums good.

I didnt catch the inspection plate being off when I bought the car...I found it when I was changing the oil a few days ago and didnt know if it was left off on purpose. So I guess it should be covered? Does anyone know where I could get one or have a link to one?

The tires are ...Rear - Firestone Firehawk indy 500 255/60/15 on Ion wheels
Front are firestone firehawk 185/65/15

Here are some more pics from my gallery on here...feel free to check it out.

8" would have been stock. 8.8" would be off of a later model mustang, the II and the fox, I think. It is most likely an 8". There should be a spec tag attached to one of the 3rd member bolts to help you identify the gearing

What's a third member bolt. ?.my knowledge of rear differentials is.....take the old oil out, put the new oil in...lol But im willing to learn. It feels good to talk to some people about this. I'm kinda out there in the wind with this car, none off my friends are car guys, just me and my brother, and we have the same limited knowledge. Thanks so much to help me get it sorted and spec'ed. To me the first step to knowing, moding, maintaining a car like this is to know what you have...

Cheers,
Joe

The picture you took of the rear end is the back of the housing. The third member is piece that sits right behind the drive shaft. It transfers the driveshaft rotation to the axles which make them rubbers burn so to speak haha.

You'll find a ton of helpful and great people on this forum. It's a great place to figure things out and get ideas and how to's for others.

And yo answer your question.....

There are about 10? Bolts that connect the 3rd to the housing. On on of those bolts, there should be a little tag (1 1/2" by 1/2") with a few numbers and letters. Type that into some neat little database on the ol' inter web and boom, you know what you got.

Cool, ill have to check it out in the morning.

I did my first oil change on her yesterday and used royal purple 10/w40. Do any of you know what the norm is fo a 302? Synthetic/regular and the like. ?.

The oil that came out looked nice and clean, so I was happy about that.

Welcome! Great looking ride! As people said, flywheel cover is pretty important. Other things I noticed, it looks like the rear shocks are somewhat new, that's good. Also looks like your exhaust is aftermarket - not necessarily a bad thing. Your engine bay is ridiculously clean...no engine bay should be that clean! With those large wheels, do you have any rubbing issues and is your speedo accurate? Also do you have front disc or drum brakes?

That's all I saw that others haven't mentioned. Do you have plans for it, or are you keeping things as is? Enjoy!

Got under the car this morning to take a few pics and check out the Differential Tag...Here is what i came up with...

I read the top line as WCZ T and the second line as 8 0 5EC 911

I think i got it right but im not sure how to decode it....

As far as plans for the car...well she is not stock anyway so I might as well mod it to be a nice, safe, quasi show, quasi cruise car. I want to do the LED lights all around first and change out to halogen headlights with those ring of LED's around it.

I want that retro Radio with bluetooh

I want shoulder seat belts in the back for my kids

I want, I want I want...lol

Joe

Yep, someone put the same cherry bombs on my car. Looks like your diff might have a leak at the front. I've never dealt with that, so I can't say how much of a hassle it is.

I'm all for the safety upgrades! I found aftermarket H3 halogen housings on amazon for a very fair price. Good quality, and now I can put in any headlight bulb I want. I just ordered 3 pt seatbelts for the front seats of my 67. Just having lap belts freaks me out a little. Next is full back, locking seats. I also want....

WCZ T corresponds to a 66 mustang with an 8.8 rear end with 3.50 gears. That's what I found out. You can just google "WCZ T axle code" and click on the first result and see for yourself

What's the consensus on cherry bombs... The car sounds nice... It's got a good Rumble without being obnoxious.... I wonder how she will do on inspection?

Seems strange... I think I'm reading those numbers right... I guess it was changed out when the engine was upgraded...

As far as a leak goes... Every joint down under therefore like that as well... Looks like someone was very liberal with spray lube... Lol Anyway nothing seems to be leaking., but I'll keep an eye on it...

Yes, but only going fast over a speed bump, or to quick on a steep enterance to a driveway or a parking lot. I has Air Shocks in the back and its pumped up to a point where its very difficult to hit the fender...but the fenders in the back do need to be rolled a bit...
