Lifter question... Please help.
Lifter question... Please help.
I have a ticking noise in my engine. I've been trying to find an answer, and today I took it to a shop to have it looked at. They say that I have a sticky lifter. I think I have the bad lifter located (far back passenger side) . I don't want to spend $500 replacing a $5 part. So, I've been looking into replacing it myself.
Everything I read says that I have to remove the intake manifold to remove a lifter. I can't figure this part out. I've read that you remove the pushrods (i know how this is done) and use a strong magnet to pull out the lifter through the hole where the pushrod was. If this is the case, why the need to remove my intake????? Am I missing something?
I appreciate all responses, even the ppl who think I'm a moron for not knowing this answer. Haha.

the hole in the intake that the pushrod goes thru is about half the size of the lifter .. i have not fooled with that old an engine in a great while but you need to know if you have an adjustable valve train .. if so you may just tighten down the offending lifter a bit .. if not and i wouldn`t be affraid to do this myself but some other motor purest on here will scoff .. find the loose rocker ( due to the partially collapsed lifter ) and put a very thin shim ( washer )under the nut that holds the rocker down .. you may have to try several thicknesses to get the lifter to snug up and get quiet .. but dont use any washer thicker than about .030 .. .. it is a crutch but may be a fix .. iv`e done it with success
