I ran into a friend I haven't seen in a while at Olive Garden last night, and he told me of a garage that has 6-8 old mustangs in a fenced in lot that the owner is looking to unload. They are all basket cases. (i.e. need floors, possibly frame rails, total resto) at least two are big blocks from what I was told. I'm going to make some calls and go scouting tomorrow after work.

Anyone have an idea what a 69-70 428 Mach would be worth in 'basket case' condition? If this turns out to be true, I want to offer money on the spot, but I want to be realistic on the price too.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

no idea on price but unless you are a mechanic it is probably cheaper to buy one that is restored rather than do it yourself.

Well, I'm considering this as a multi-year project, if I indeed get it. I agree, it won't be cheap to restore, but it won't cost me the same as what they are going for on ebay if I do it myself.

If it's in as bad of shape as you say I personally I wouldn't go over about $500. Basically all you're getting is a shell with a VIN and you're going to have to rebuild/replace most everything.

If you want a better idea then price comparable vehicles and then start subtracting from that amount all the items that will have to be replaced or rebuilt. Whatever is left is about what you should pay for it. It's very possible you'll get into negative amounts but unless you can talk him into giving it to you for free then you'll have to give him something. Just try to keep it as low as possible and that's why I gave the $500 limit.

He wouldn't happen to have any '65 or '66 fastbacks there too, would he?

BTW, I remember seeing a '66 K-code GT fastback sitting in a junkyard in southern Georgia and the guy said I could have it for $200. It had rusted floorpans and rails and even the shock towers were going. At the time I had just bought a primo A-code fastback and figured it was too much work and not worth it. Boy I wish I had bought it and just stored it. The worst thing is it probably ended up in the crusher.

Well, I called my friend this AM. he told me what the guy had:
67 GT 390 4-spd
68 1/2 428 CJ 4-spd
69 R-code Mach 1 4spd
70 Mach 1 351C 4spd
70 Boss 302

I about fell over when he said this. He gave me the guy's cell phone number. I call, but it was disconnected.

So, I stopped at the garage this afternoon. The guy wasn't there, but his son was. So I talked to him, and he said the 70 Mach 1 and Boss 302 were sold. (no idea on price). The two CJs were not for sale (my buddy must have gotten the info wrong). But, he said the 67 390 still is, and its had new quarters and other new stuff. Its complete, but needs assembly. he said ~$6-7K, which doesn't seem too bad if its all there and in good shape. He also said that a person the family knows has a 71 Mach 1 429 SCJ for sale, but it needs some of the rare pieces (i.e. snorkel and intake, which cost big $$$), but the asking price was under $10K.

So, no 428 for me. But, the GT 390 sounds promising.

Skorch if you're interested in the 71, the guy is suppossed to call me tomorrow with info on the GT. I'll ask for more details on the 71 for ya.

Ok, here's the deal, on the 67 I came across. Its an original 67 GT 390 4-spd car (s-code). Originally, red with black int. I haven't seen it yet, but this is what's been told to me over the phone.

New: quarters, taillight panel, rear frame rails, inner/outer fender wells, door skins, cowl vent, and inner front aprons.

Car is rolling. Its sandblasted, and had the bodywork done, but no paint.

Engine: non-original 390 (dated correctly though), with correct intake heads etc.

no transmission or hood included.

He has the Marti report on it.

I am going to take a look at it next week in person. He wants $7K. Opinions, comments, and suggestions wanted.

IMO, the price is a little high.

Sounds a little high, but not completely out of the ballpark. Depends on what else is there/missing, and the quality of the work done.

67 390 cars have been bringing some ridiculous money lately.

Yeah, I've noticed. There's a couple on ebay that are in the mid-high 20s. With "reserve not met'.
