I need some advice
I am 18 and my dream car is a 65-66 Fastback w/ a 289. In May I had to settle a little short of my dream and I bought a 66 6cyl coupe. I am considering buying another car in the fall of 05 and was thinking of a 2005 Mustang GT. But I am debating on wheather buying a 05 or a nice 65/66 Fastback. I figure I can find a real nice one for less than I could buy a 05 GT. And with the price always going up on these antiques I wonder if it would be more pratical to buy it now and save it before the prices are so expensive that I cant afford it when I get older. Then I would use my 66 as a daily driver until one day I could retire her and spend some quality time restoring her. Just a thought and I wondered what yall thought.
Thanks
Jeff
Thanks

I don't know that you'll find a 65/66 fastback that you can just hop in and drive for less than $8000. Maybe - but I wouldn't count on it. On tyhe other hand - if you're wanting to spend about what that new '05 will run you, drop me a line!
I've lived alot of your scenario, so let me lay it down for you.
My first car was a 65 6cyl, which I loved, but I fell in love with a certain 66 fastback and had to have it. At 19 I finally talked that guy out of his car, and I drove it through most of college. (I got to drive my mom's old beater Nissan for awhile, which was nice because a college parking lot can be an unforgiving place) In the time between 19 and 26 that I ws living in apartments my poor fastback languished in even worse apartment parking lots and didn't get the attention that it deserved and needed. Now that I have a house and garage, I've finally been able to give it that attention and it's paying off bigtime.
All that said, what would I advise? I would probably go one of two routes:
A: You have access to a garage that you can park and work on it in, you get the fastback now and seriously consider getting a beater to stick in the parking lot during school or work.
B: You're like most your age, and have alot of things up in the air right now, including how you're going to make a living, and need something reliable. In that case I'd seriously consider the 05 Mustang. There's no reason a car has to be boring just because you can't pamper it in a garage.
I did it the hard way and my fastback suffered sun damage and a hail storm, though I did get the pleasure of driving it alot. But once I was out of school and working, I had my fastback in the garage getting new parts and work, and a 96 GT for my daily driver. I think (hope) an '06 GT is going to look really nice parked next to my 66 in the future.

Definitely get a beater jsmith86, thats what i did, got my old toyota for 1500 bucks, canadian that is, and you cant kill it. Put only the essentials on it when absolutley needed, and spend the rest of your money on the car of your choice.
I would think it depends on what car u have now. If you have a nice car to drive around for everyday use then i would get the fastback (cause they are a blast to have) but if you need a good primary driving car then I would go with a 05. Classic cars are a BLAST to drive. I know I take mine out every nice day but they are cold in the winter, hot in the summer, bad gas milage, and don't drive smoothly but the instant you hit that gas pedal you don't have a care in the world. There is nothing like feeling raw power from an american muscle car. However, the 05 is powerful is a lot more comfortable drive. That is why I drive my newer mustang for everyday use and my classic for crusing on nice days.
i agree with getting a beater. i have a 93 cherokee for my DD/beater. the 4.0 in the cherokee will run just about forever and you really have to abuse it to kill it. mine currently has right at 180,000 miles on it and stil runs like a top, although i think a new o2 sensor is in the near future. haven't ever had to anything realy major too it, just basic maintenance stuff, shocks, brakes, steering components, belts hoses, radiator, etc.
