While it is not very often that something hasn't been done already, I feel safe venturing a guess that it will be pretty rare to find someone who did chose to spend 2k on one upgrade for the 2nd smallest V8 in the whole Ford Line up. I do not know how much extra power you would get from it but I have to think for that kind of scratch that stroking would net you more for less on an even scale.

Well, my other option is a set of either GT-40x or AFR heads. That will be about half, or 2/3 the price of the blower, but I just think the blower would be really sweet. But, you're right, its a lot of cashola for one upgrade. I'm already stroked to a 302, and bored 40 over. A larger motor will cost way too much. I dont know.... something about that picture puts a silly grin on my face.

Swap the cam and heads, that will put a nice grin on ya, and go with the AFRs.

...So if I go with the AFR 185cc, how much cam should I get? I was thinking 280, but I think that may be too much. I still want the car to sound normal and I don't want it to die on me all the time.

If you're gonna put a blower on, how much boost are you going to limit yourself to?

Think about the gaskets, seals, rings and everything else that has to be factored in if you pressurize that puppy. Keeping the boost low enough to give the motor some longevity may not give you all the oomph you're hoping for. Pumping up the boost will shorten the engine's life.

That is a very good point...I put about 3,000 miles a year on it. And I have never really had any mechanicle problems. I want everything to be very dependable, so should I scrap the S/C, and go full steam with the heads and cam?

I have a paxton and had my engine built for it. I would suggest tht before you start buying stuff, you contact a shop that knows fords. Better yet, contact jmc or jme and ask them what to do. Stroking would work also.

did you read the whole thread? He stated it is already upped in displacement to a 302

That doesn't mean that going to a 331 or 347 isn't a viable option. There's virtually no performance advantage to going from 289 to 302ci.

That said, there are tons and tons of people with blown small blocks, and it can surely be done reliably. What I like about that particular blower would be the positive displacement, and the off-the-line power it would deliver.

Isnt the 289 block the same as the 302 block???

I thought ford just bored out the 289?

If he already did that on his own, then he's got a 302, right?

Block should be virtually the same. The 302 uses a different crank/longer rods.

About what would be the cost of going to a 347? Will pushing it that much take a toll on the motor? I really just want to know what will be the best thing to do for a lot of power, with good reliability, really.

Get the AFR 185 Heads, a cam in the 274 or even 268 range
Comp Cam Extreme Energy is a good choice.
I think I ran a 274 with 512 lift in a 351W, it purred like a kitten.
Not positive on the cam specs but somewhere in that range is still pretty mild.

Going stroker is the way to go if your budget allows, but you will need new heads for that anyway. So buy these heads and cam and save for a nice stroker short block for later when you get bored and need more power!
