Hi folks,

The interior vent panels for my dad's 68 fastback are pretty well pitted. Are there any ways of restoring these, to at least a respectable condition?

I've been trying to sand them down smoothe but it's not really working...by hand b/c I don't want to risk damaging the panel itself. I saw a set go for $600 on eBay, so replacing them is pretty much out of the question.

We figured we could try to get the surfaces sanded smoothe, and then repaint the whole section black again, and just sand the tops off so the metal would show through. I know a fresh coat of paint will do wonders, but I thought I'd check to see if anybody had any luck refurbishing these.

Thanks again.

I'm going on memory what those panels look like. I chrome plating shop can restore pitted chrome for you, they grind it down, polish it, and then rechrome it. It's almost as pricey as the $600 by the time you are done though.

Find a shop and ask them. They might tell you how to do some of the process yourself to save coin.

Thanks Jay, do you know if there is any way of removing the metal trim from the panel? it looks like it's riveted on, and the only way to remove it would be to bust the panel?

Are there "heads" to those rivets showing from the other side?

nope, there are no heads on the front side showing. I guess I'll just sand as best I can on em and hopee paint hides most of the pits.

on a side note, ya know what the name of this part is? It's been so long since we dismantled the motor, I can't remembere what it's for..but I can't find anything like it on ebay....
