IIRC, the 87-88's look way better. throw in a Northstar V8 and call it a day.

The 87-88's do look better, I agree. The seats never changed though from 84 to 88 except that only the first 2 years had the speakers built into the headrest. It certainly had it's share of engine problems the first year which hurt it's life span but it had a lot of cool things going for it and no real domestic competition. They have had a much more succesful after life in the kit car world today than they did as new transportation in the 80's.

For me I was only ever really interested in a set of the seats and not the car in general. Many of the major high end hot rod and street rod show cars use the seats actually in all kinds of modified ways. They are also popular with the MG, Pantera, Bricklin, Delorean, Corvette, Camaro, Firebird, Dune Buggy, Jeep and VW crowds. This seat was especially designed by the Lear Corporation (not GM). It is unusually low and narrow, with good side support. This is why it works particularly well in a Mustang. As anyone who owns one knows, if you do not have a rare tilt away wheel option than there is little leg room between your thigh and the wheel. Most aftermarket seats give you even less room. With this seat you can have it fit anywhere from same as stock to almost an extra 2" if you want depending on how you mount it.
Another bonus is that the bolt pattern on the bottom of the seat is 'typical' 1980s GM, so it will bolt on top of many GM power seat track packages so you can go real full restomod custom if you want to make them power too.

Hey! I was kidding. I actually like the "fastback" version - it looked much better to me. Almost bought one but picked an '87 Firebird with T-tops instead.

Just as an update, I finally got around to putting the interior back together on my car so here's a few shots of the seats installed. They fit like a glove and you pick up some much needed room between the steering wheel and your thighs.

Those look pretty sweet. I wonder how hard would be to put speakers in the headrests of the new cars.

Not too hard I guess, the biggest factors would be to make sure there is no metal around the magnets, replace foam with heat resistent and to punch a few small holes in the back as well as all the speaker holes in the front, can't have sound without the air circulating.

Wow those look awesome. Cool thing is there is a Fiero graveyard about 20 mins away from me. They even have a wrecked ferrari there. I could get the seats out of them.

LOL, would love to see that! Then put some cavallino rampante badges on the fender.
