Ok....so I've always wondered how much my car is worth just in case I had to sell it...Not market value, but how much someone is actually willing to pay for it. So I have an idea...I was thinking about putting my car up on ebay, and creating a very real acution, but have my reserve so high, there would be no way someone would reach it (and if it was reached, they can have it anyway!!) I dont know how much it would cost, probably around $100?? but I think it would be a very fun and exciting experiment....What do you think?????

Give me $100 and a pic of your car. I'll tell you what it's worth!

well...the way I see it, Ebay wont care, becuase they are still getting their money for the auction, and I really wouldn't care if I ended up selling my car, becuase of the rediculas reserve I would set...($30,000+) If someone buys my car for $30,000...I'll gift wrap it for them...

It costs $40 to list a passenger vehicle. Then you pay another $40 if it sells (no matter what the final price is).

So, since it won't sell, it will only cost you $40.

And you are right, eBay won't care. They get their $40 no matter what.

I think It might cost extra to put a reserve on the it though...I think all of those prices are for "no reserve" auctions..

edit: It's $5 to add a reserve

Nope... I sold my motorcycle through eBay. It cost $30 (I had a $5000 reserve). Then I paid $30 more when it sold.

Those reserve listing fees are for regular eBay items and eBay Motors parts and accessories.

Well, now I see it... $5.00 for a reserve. That must have been added since I sold my bike.

OK, I stand corrected... $45!

That's really not a bad idea... I would like to see what I could get for my South Carolina Highway Patrol car:

No WAY!!!!! you guys would bid on it just to jack the price up...better hope you don't bid too high.....you might meet the reserve....I'm not going to put the reserve at like, $1,000,000...it will be something attainable, but very, very, very unlikely to be met

While it is an interesting experiment and would be fun to watch, all you will learn is what someone was willing to pay at that particular time and place, there is no way you can bank on the results though or use it for a true future reference. Ask anyone that builds auction cars, they'll tell you that timing is everything and that it can take several auctions before you find the right audience with the right wallet.

Personally aside from just having fun with it, I think the money is better spent towards a true appraisal or half a dozen six packs.
