Thumbs up

Hi all--

If you were to take an extended trip--750 miles or more--in your mustang, what would you make sure to bring, besides a small, but good set of tools? And what tools would you bring?

Trying to make sure I'm not going to forget anything. . . .

Thanks!

jumper cables or portable battery booster, at least one gallon of antifreeze or water, fix a flat, extra set of belts and probably upper and lower hoses and maybe some heater hose as well and a good jack. for tools i would take a good selection of open end wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers and pliers, some wire cutters and a really good lock blade pocket knife, preferably fairly large. don't forget a good flashlight too. some flares would also be a good idea. i always take 2 or 3 quarts of oil and tranny fluid as well. make sure the spare tire is in good shape and has plenty of air too. some things i would do before leaving would be an oil change, tire rotation and balance, and if it hasn't been serviced lately a tranny fluid service with a flush as well. make sure the brakes are in good shape too. if you can't tell i'm kinda paranoid about taking long trips, been stranded in the middle of nowhere too many times. oh one thing i forgot if you have a stock style distributor, regardless of whether it is points or has been converted to pertronix or something, take a set of points and condensor with you as well. if you are good at packing stuff you can get most all of this stuff in a small duffle bag.

Having done several long trips this year....

My #1 tool is a cell phone. WORST case, I can "fix" about anything with that.

I carry a tool bag with a complete combination wrench assortment (from 3/16" to 7/8"), screwdrivers, a hammer, and several types of pliers/cutters. When travelling alone, I also bring a small floor jack and jackstand. Depending on the trip, I've been known to also pack a small 12V air compressor (for tires) and jumper cables.

For spare "parts", a few small pieces of hose, a quart of oil, a small can of brake fluid, 1 gallon of water, duct tape, zip ties (replaces baling wire!), small WD40, and rags.

ALWAYS perform a driveway test tire change if you've made ANY modifications to your car. You find things like "the existing lug wrench won't fit in my new wheels" and "my spare doesn't clear the new brakes".... (don't ask how I know this) When I carry a spare, it's a space-saver off a late-model Lincoln.

Very true! That I remember from driving the GT in highschool.

I'm thinking of trying to make the trip from SE Louisiana to the show in Huntsville in May. It has been quite awhile since I have made a 900+ mile run in the old pony. I was just wondering.

I have a feeling that various forces will conspire against me--most notably the fact that I may have to give final exams that week/grade them that weekend--but I thought it would be good to start planting the suggestion with the wife.

I did the last year's show in Biloxi and had a good time. However, Biloxi is much closer. We'll see. Who knows?

Thanks for the list. Now I have a checklist that I can start.

Oh, and Bob, I've done the driveway test before only to find out that my plans often cause more trouble than they solve!

Here's my cell phone lesson. A) Make sure it is charged or B) make sure the car charger that you have in your Mustang fits your brand new cell phone. Did this one awhile back. I wanted to throw the phone in the bayou and let the gators eat it. :bang:

You can play games on it while you wait for a roll-back wrecker to drag you home
