Engine help?

So I've attached a picture from under the hood and would welcome any help on what you see that either looks wrong or could be fixed/done different/replaced. Mind you I've just recently bought it so I haven't done any work yet. A little too cold up here in Alaska already

Looks like a little cleaning would help. Does she run good? Or are your just trying to make it look good(cosmetically)

No smoke but the sludge more or less squirts out of the pipes. I can press the gas and nothing happens but when I press a little harder to rev up, that's when it happens

I was thinking it was just carbon from the car running rich but now it sounds like oil/coolant..does it smell like either of those things? Does it go thru a lot of oil or coolant quickly?

Not sure since I've just recently got it. Only thing ive done was buy a battery to start it up n run it for a test ride. Drives quite rough

Start with replacing all your fluids, spark plugs, filters..see if that helps a bit

Ok sounds good. It's a 302 but I'm not sure of the year. Does that matter or are all 302s basically the same build

It does not really matter, all early 302's are pretty much the same. If you want to find out what year it is, there is a vin code located behind the starter on the engine block. If anyone has an example of this, it would probably help to have a picture. I don't seem to have a picture of mine on my phone.

Thanks. So even though the 65 didn't originally come with a 302, any work I do around the engine should be referenced to a 302 for it to fit correctly?

Not sure if its just me being a beginner at all this but the 2nd picture doesn't look like its suppose to look that way. Almost looks like the metal melted together or some sort

It does look kind of strange, but that may just be because of all of the grease/dirt build-up. I'd say take a putty knife to it and see what the actual metal looks like underneath all that grime.

Even so, you may want to get new upper and lower a-arms anyway. After so many years, it may not be worth it to chance. Any other opinions out there?

Still learning the different parts. Is that the one at the top of the picture? And what's the diff between control arms and a arms

Yes that's the one on the top of the picture, and the bottom. You have upper and lower A-Arms. Control arms are part of your steering links. They're different.
