Question Engine dies sometimes when starting out.

Have a 6 cylinder 65 mustang that will die sometimes when pulling out after stopping. Have replaced plugs, wires, fuel pump, adjusted carb. Carb is new. There is no telling when it will do it, but has me stumped. Any ideas?

Does it struggle to turn on during both cold/warn start? Check the timing, it may be firing early/late.

The new carb should have a new accelerator pump, but check if it sprays when you open the throttle.

Usually does it after its been warmed up, no problems starting, starts right up. Will check the carb for spray. Set the timing up and down with no change. Its very hit and miss when it happens, can go a couple of days without it happening and then it does it, and may not do it again for a while.

I have a 67 6cyl that does the same thing. Of course it never does it for the mechanic so he thinks its fine, still charges me though.

Vacuum line

For my own education, why would this make a difference, Will try it for the next couple of days and see if it works.

Because I had this issue. Car would die for no dang reason. '66 Mustang I6 200. Intermittently, and at the leaving of a light. It was... irritating to be nice about it.

At first, I thought it was some sort of issue with a pressure difference in the gas tank, so I'd try taking the gas cap off and... amazingly enough... it would start up after a little cranking.

This happened a few times... Didn't know what to do except this... and nobody did figure it out when I told them these symptoms either.

Turned out the fuel pump was going out... and would starve the carb. Diaphragm was messed up I guess. After I sold it (STUPID STUPID STUPID, I regret it to this day...) the guy had it happen to him, changed the fuel pump, and tada, problem solved. Just happened to break on him the day after he bought it. Amazing timing that.

And that's why I postulate the fuel pump.
