hi, i'll be getting a 1967 or 1968 Fastback soon hopefully but i'm unsure if to get a 302 or 390, does anyone have any opinions on this? is there a big difference in the two? thanks, Justin

Depends on alot of factors. There aren't that many 67-68 fastbacks out there. I would base my purchase on the overall condition of the car, not just the engine it's equipped with. The 390 is more rare, and most likely more valuable in a collector sense. The 289-302 is arguably more streetable if you plan on driving it. The biggest difference is that one is a small block (smaller displacement, and lighter) the other is a big block (bigger and heavier). The 390 is capable of producing alot of torque. Really the 289-302 is as well, but they say that big blocks can make it more easily.

The 390 weighs alot more. The 302 small block is much better for street driving. The big block is just plain cool to have.

i don't know the difference in weight, but the 390 would make up for it in torque. If you want a high revving car, stick to the 302 because of its stroke is shorter than the 390, but the 390 is a beast, Im more of a 390 fan...hope this helps

390 = 650 lbs

302 = 460 lbs

....psst...stroke the 302 B)

Stroke the 302 and you will be very happy. There are many variations of 347 Stokers out there to get you in the power level you want to be at.
