How well would this hold up? I was thinking that I could buy white panels & arm rests and dye them the color I need. I know people that have dyed the dash pads and kick panels with good results but being that the door panel would get more wear from having your arm on the rest and just rubbing against it I wonder if it would rub off.

What I'm planning......I really want to put parchment colored interior in my coupe. Unfortunately, that wasn't an option in 65 so there are no 65 style pieces that I could use. I'm putting different seats in front so those will get custom covered along with the rear seat. All metal (Dash, doors & rear panels) will be painted.

My other options are to buy material to match the seats and cover the door panels myself or have them done with the seats. I just want to stick with a pattern close to the original.

I have used the vinyl dye (spray can available from NPD) with outstanding results. After a year, the parts I sprayed for my color change (from red to black) all look fantastic. I wouldn't hesitate to do the door panels if I were you. Plus, as cheap as door panels are, it'd be worth a try just for the experiment.

 

More than likely, I'll need to use the SEM stuff and have it custom mixed to match the seats. That's what Mber used on his dash pad and it looks great.

Go for it. Vinyl Dye holds up well on most everything except stuff that gets lots of wear like seat covers. Worse thing that happens is you have to respray / freshen them up after a few years...no big deal. Dickson

 

I think I've gotten enough positive feedback on this today that I'm really feeling better about taking it on. I've been worried about dying them and then it all wearing off but I think I'm going to give it a shot. If it doesn't hold up I will proceed to have the door panels covered in the seat material.

Let's just hope the seats don't cost an arm and leg to get covered. It'd be hard to drive that way.

 

Why not just use parchment 66 door panels?

The only diff is the ribbng runs horizontal and not vertical. You've already mod'ed the interior by seat changes and different color of dash....


edit: the arm rests and kick panels are also available in parchment. They are the same for 65-66

 

Maybe it's stupid but I actually want to keep the 65 style inside. I'm even having the seats done in the same(or close) pattern as the originals. Also, the seats may not be the exact same color as the original parchment and I'll have the dye mixed to match them.

 

You should be able to special order the style of seat cover or door panel in any of the colors they sell them for other years. Should not be a problem to do that :scratch:

FYI, Another option could be to use the parchment DELUXE panels since they are the same for both years.

 

Ive used vinyl dye with good results. Even after several years, the color held up fine. Of course, that color is BLACK so YMMV.
