Did I make a good purchase?
Currently have a '65 Mustang coupe with inline 6. Went today to look at a '65 Mustang 2+2 fastback. Asking price was 10,800. The care is a true "J" code car with 4 speed and factory air. It had been in dry storage for the last 15 years. Car is very solid and rust free. Does not run as-is. Interior stripped. Everything is there, just not installed. Made an offer and he accepted. Now, my question is, did I make a good purchase for the price? Really wasn't going to buy, but the car looked so solid. I ended up paying 8,500 for the car as is. Good price?
more pictures?? Why was the front fender changed? The passengers side door doesn't seem to line up so good, or was it not closed all the way? Any other body parts new or replaced?
Well, got the car home and started stripping her down. Motor removed. It turns over easily, but I have no clue what it needs to actually run. I want to keep the original 289, so it is now at a local shop being rebuilt. Started stripping the interior down. As I knew, needs a full floor pan installed. What I did not know is there is NO wiring in the car. Only rust is in the floor pans, luckily. She needs a lot of work, though. Here are some pics of on the day we got it home.
This is were the car currently stands. We have named her "Annie". It is completely stripped and currently at restoration shop to have floor pans installed. The car has been painted a few times in the past. Badly, I may add. We have decided to go with Silver Smoke Gray on the exterior and '65 red on the interior. Motor is being rebuilt. transmission is still in the garage. Will take it to shop soon. I have about $4k of parts sitting in the garage. Paint and all supplies has been purchased. The only few major pieces I need is complete grill assembly (grill, horse/corral, etc) and a/c unit. I have decided to go with the Old Air Hurricane system as all my heat components are missing and that system is an all in one ac/heat unit. Once I get to the shop to get more photos, I will post more.
Looks like you have a good foundation to build a good car from. What is your timeline for getting the car ready to drive ? I can hardly wait to see it when you get it done. Those wheels should look good on it.
No solid timeline. It is getting floor pans installed now. Motor is being worked. Once floor pans are installed, it is time to start stripping paint and prepping for paint. I think I should have it painted with 3-4 months. We will see. I guess the timeline will depend on $. Thats why I am buying everything I can now so anything that comes up later doesn't prevent me from purchasing parts. I am just stock piling now. I hope to see her on the road sometime next year, though.
Went to the shop today and this is what I walked into... Nice little surprise. The care had about 5 coats of paint on it. The body looks much better than i was honestly expecting it to, so i am stoked right now.
For stock wiring harness, this guy rebuilds them and has been very successful. He is local to me and owns a 66 Fastback that he restored.
