cherry bombs.

Was thinking about getting new mufflers this spring. Was wondering if anyone has used these on their car? How do they sound? Extremely loud. I like a nice growl but don't want it to be obnoxious.

The '64-'68 Mustangs had a similar setup with them functioning as resonators before going into a transverse mounted muffler, ala an '80s Camaro. If I remember right, the Stang in BULLITT had the transverse muff removed.

So think of the Bullitt sound. Only in a few scenes though. From when he starts it at the beginning of the chase, to just before the Charger peels away from him, and then again when he merges back on the highway after being forced offroad by the crashing motorcyclist. The other scenes were overdubbed with a seriously built 289, IIRC.
