I have a 66 Mustang with a bone stock 302 engine that I'm running a 650 CFM Holley carburetor. Well that carburetor took a nose dive yesterday and I want a new one. The car never ran quite right and always ran way to rich. It just comes down to the fact the carburetor was just too big. I was thinking of buying a Edlebrock 600 cfm since I have a 289 performer intake. This is the question???
What CFM should I get? The spec for that motor is a Autolite 480 cfm.
I want a the right carb for the car but don't want to sacrifice power. Is a 600 too much or should I go with a 500 cfm?
Any help would be great wondering what your guys take on this is. Thanks :nice

On a stock motor with a Performer intake, I'd definitely run the 500 cfm carb. It will have better drivability and mileage than the 600. By the time you spin the motor rpm's high enough to use the 600's extra cfm capacity, you'll run out of breathing ability from your other components (cam, intake, heads).
Now, If near-future plans include camshaft, head, intake and exhaust upgrades, go ahead and get the 600 cfm carb now.

I agree with Cloney, but I also have to relay my experience.
I've had an Edelbrock 1405 600cfm with no choke (Texas) on my almost stock 289 for 8 years. Not only has it always run great, but I've never had to tune it. I got mine as a 600 so I'd have room to grow, and I'm still waiting on that $ to grow with.

I just put a 625 road demon on my 289. I have not turned a screw on it yet.And it fires imedietly and pulls strong through the entire rpm range. It is running a bit rich but once I get all the other bugs in the car worked out i,ll try some jetting.Honestly i hate to touch it...
