Car dies when I "Floor" it

ok...so a lot of you know my car, '65, 289 auto coupe, It runs like a top, never had any problems with it, but it has always done something that hasn't really gotten me too upset, but now its getting on my nerves...
So this it what it does...If I am at a stand still, and I floor it, it dies...so that takes any chance of a burn out and throws it in the trash. Also...when I am going about 30 or so, and I floor it, it kinda caughs first, but then HANG ON!!!! Why does it do this?? a carb issue? I want to be able to ruin my brakes by doing burnouts, but I cant cause it dies...Its pretty embarresing if someone sees it happen too...

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem, but I'm not an expert. When you open it up and the air rushes in, there's not enough fuel to keep it running? Maybe the fuel pump isn't working properly or the carb needs to be rebuilt.

Could be the float level in the carb, either that or something is wrong with the secondaries. It sounds almost as if the secondaries are coming in late, if at all. If the carb is old, maybe the diaphragm is gone.

What kind of carb is it?

Cody,

Has this always happened, or is it recent. It definitely sounds as if there is something wrong with the secondaries coming in. Like I mentioned before, check the condition and level of the float, and see if there is something wrong with the secondaries (my best guess). If the carb has been sitting with dirty gasoline for a long time, I would consdier rebuilding it. I never rebuilt a carb before and managed to do a really good job on the motorcraft carb on my '66 Galaxie. I followed the instructions and it fired up right away.
