C4 Shifter pattern

I have a early 65 coupe with a c4 auto and it has D 2 1 But I have a friend with the same car and his has a little dot then a big green dot then 1. He said he puts it is the 2nd postion for drive. Can any one tell me about this? Which is right? Is the tranny different?

Thanks Ed

Do you both have the stock shifter bezel? I've never seen what your friend is talking about.

The tranny is most likely the same, but the shifter thing itself is what seems to be different.

Have you got any pics?

the one with the dot is correct. it was called the "green" gear. supposedly is geared for better traction, in the rain and whatever else.

this is the one you have:

the dot one is your standard drive gear... geared the highest.

1 only has 1 gear in it, and the green gear has 2 gears.

hope that clarify's something up for ya

yup! i usually run her in the green gear until about 50 mph or so.... then shift it into drive so it will go into that 3rd gear and cruise right along.

im not sure what the shifter bezel without the green gear is for

maybe later years. or a different car...

cause all the literature i have ever read tells about the C4 with the green gear for 65-66 stangs

Haven't gotten my '66 out in a while, but here's what I recall about the operation of the 'green dot' transmission. If you put the shifter in the 1st dot after neutral, D in later years, the trans will do a 2-3 shift. But if you put it in the 'green dot' position it will shift 1-2-3. Also, the valve body is different in the 'green dot' C-4 and the later C-4. kennyg
