Bogging and quitting

We were just on a ride in our 65 vert and she started to bog and die out then backfire and go back to normal...it did this at least 5 times and we have no idea what the problem is or how to fix it

Well, it's certainly not impossible, but I would bet on the fuel filter as well. If you end up replacing it do your self a favor and get one with a clear glass body and replacable element like the one that Spectre makes, far easier to see when there is a problem, unless you have a concours car of course.
Odds are the filter was clogged by the way you describe it and all that happened was once you stopped the backwash of gas cleaned it out. rest assured that if it is the filter then the problem will reappear and most likely at a bad time. It takes less than 5 minutes to clamp off the lines, pull the two retainers off and remove the filter. If you can't blow thru it than gas can't pass thru it.
