Airbag conversion for 1st gen mustang

Airbag conversion for 1st gen mustang

I am trying to find out if there is a kit to retrofit an air bag (safety kind...not suspension) for a 1966 mustang convertible? If there is no kit, is there a steering column from a later model that can be installed into the "66?
Thank you for any help you can give!

OK I have time....
You can do anything with enough money.
Mind you, NO ONE will take the legal liability to do this.
This is some of what you need:
Crash sensors placed in proper places on vehicle
Wiring harness to steering column
Wiring harness for passenger side
Wiring harnesses to sensors
Computer controller for sensors and airbag
Steering wheel with airbag
Passenger dashboard airbag
.
I think we are up over several thousand dollar here without labor already so I'll stop.
MY ADVICE:
Go out and get a couple of safety harnesses for the seats if you are really concerned.

One last thing...
I have been in many crashes.
I can tell you airbags only work for the FIRST impact.
The second collision 2 seconds later they will already be deflating.
Make sure you have good belts and wear them.

I've owned Mustangs for more than 22 years and have never seen anything like what the OP wants. I've been in several accidents, all pre-airbag, and personally don't care much for airbags, especially the earlier more powerful ones. The newer ones use weight and positional sensors in the seats to determine the force of the airbag release (and whether or not to set it off), and each airbag system is designed from the outset for the specific car, with multiple front and rear sensors.

If you are really that concerned about safety, either drive a newer car with all of the latest safety gadgets on it, or put a full roll cage in the '66 Mustang, but along with that, you'll need a race seat, full harness, helmet, and ideally head & neck restraint.

I was just going to say why would anybody do this to any collector car??

I would NOT do this. Forget about the collector car part. The problem is that the car is NOT designed for airbags. Airbag control modules and sensors are all made to work as part of a system that the entire car is engineered for. Airbag timing is important not only for them to be effective, but also not to be dangerous. Without the engineering of a modern car including the materials used and crumple zones in the design of the car, the airbags aren't going to work. Sure, someone could design a ground-up system, but there aren't enough classic cars to do the necessary testing and the amount of work to design an individual system for an individual car would be extremely cost ineffective. Not going to happen.
