68 cowl repair? Anyone know what size drill bit?
You need to buy a spot weld drill bit. It's specificly sized for spot welds. I wouldn't use a regular drill bit. Your going to end up with a bunch of holes and missing metal. I'll take a picture of one later when I get home.
If you notice in this picture the cowl is removed and it has a bunch of holes along where the spot welds were. The whole idea is to drill out the spot welds from the top cowl but not drilling all the way through your lower cowel. So when your done the lower cowel still has all the metal spot welds that you'll grind down smooth making it ready for your new upper cowl. Be prepared to replace your lower cowl. It's usually in rough shape. If your replacing the lower cowel, then you'll have to repeat the same process again after patiently removing the top cowel. Be sure to take measurements of where your existing cowel sits. So when you put in the new cowel it lines up exact to factory spec. Also be sure to lubricate the drill bit before drilling every spot weld. If you don't you'll burn out the drill but quickly. You also will have to drill a small hole in the center of every spot weld for the guider pin on the center of the drill bit. You don't have to drill all the way through. Just a little bit for the guider pin to sit properly. Before I started drilling anything I took a marker and located every spot weld to make things easier clearer.
