Hello every one have a question for those who know what the engine in my car might of looked like in 66? My car when I bought it had gold valve covers and a black engine block. From the research I have done I know that was a 65 engine color setup. What I found out was that the engine in it was a 65 engine and the numbers did not match the car.

With that in mind and the orginal engine blown after racing it to much I replaced it with a stock 302 motor I was straped for cash and it was cheaper to buy a long block 302 then short block 289. More bang for my buck you would say. Me being young and stupid and not knowing any better paited it old Ford blue :bang: before I put it in the car. I'm nearing the point in which I want the car's engine to look (Even though it's a 302) more like it did in 66. I'm pulling it and painting the engine bay but while it's out want to get the color and valve covers and such right the way it was in 66. This is not a Hipo engine but does now have a 289 prformer intake and a 650 Edlebrock carb.

I'm sure now that the color for 66 was Corporate blue however, what valve covers, air cleaner assembly, and exhaust mainfolds were on GTs that year. Please post suggestion or pics of what you think would look classic for 1966 musatng GT or if this is a stupid idea since it's not a engine that came in the car to begin with that year? Thanks!

66 engine should be Ford Blue. The black/red was for 65 only. Don't get Ford Dark Blue, as that was for 68+

OK, first off, your 302 is not a long block, to most common folks and even some Mustang people, a 302 properly dressed as a 289 is darn near impossible to distinguish. Since you aren't going for a concours show stopper, do whatever you like. I see nothing wrong or stupid in making your engine at least look correct to your car. Feel free to tak liberties too, no point in busting your chops on making it exact, just capture the essence and it will look fine and more than at home, IMHO.

Pak, You do know long block= complete minus intake, exhaust and accessories vs short block= block and rotating assembly (ie no heads, etc), right?

I was under the impression when you buy a long block that meant you get the block with the heads and just the block is known as a short block. That was what I was referring too.

Any who, thanks for the pics guys Not sure what I'm going to do it's still up in the air.

"66 engine should be Ford Blue... Don't get Ford Dark Blue, as that was for 68+"

Hey Mark - It's always been my understanding that all Mustang engines from 1966 on are Ford Corporate Blue. Are you saying that 66/67s were a lighter shade? I don't think that's correct... Do you have any documentation to back that up?

OK, I'm confused now. From what I have seen from restoration mags is that from 66+ Ford painted the engines Ford Corporate Blue (drak blue). If any one has any refrences if that is incorrect please lead me to the direction of where I might find this info please post them.

From what I have seen at car shows most engines in 66s are bright blue not as dark as like 69 mustangs and stuff. When I painted mine at first I thought that old ford blue was this color put it's almost a light blue.

Did a little Googling...
1966 engines were painted Ford Corporate (dark) Blue, as were all successive V8s. In other words, there's no difference in 1966 blue and 1968 blue.
Here's a quote from a Mustang Monthly srticle:

"...Duplicolor's Dark Ford Blue (1606) is an accepted color for '66 and later Ford engine restorations... Plastikote is another paint brand, Royal Blue (1134) an acceptable color for '66 and later."

And here's a link to the whole thing:
