'65 Gas Gauge Issue

My '65 convertible's gas gauge is reading "E" but I thought I had enough gas in the tank so I stoped to fill it (only $8.50 which is like 2 gal in CT). The gauge stayed on "E" and later in the day went to 1/2 tank. What could be the issue the float in the tank? Is this a BIG deal to fix or should I just live with it?

most often times the sending unit in the tank is the culprit ,, but first make sure all connections are good .. rarely does a gas gauge in the dash fail .. it`s not out in the elements ..

Thanks as that is what i thought...funny thing I hit a bump in the road and it went to 1/2 full..then later it went up to 3/4 where it usually will go on a full tank..so maybe it was just a querky thing and eventually it will fully fail

the gauge on my tank has read empty for 5 years. I've just never looked into getting it fixed. probably should.
