5-Speed Conversion

Has anyone done one of these by themselves? I am looking at pulling my 3-Speed out and putting a T-5 in. I have mapped out the parts I need but is this something I can do if I have enought technical ability to replace a clutch? From what I have heard in my case the '69 drive shaft fits better after putting a T-5 in with no cutting with less slack... Is there anything else that I need to know going into this?

Thanks from a newbie...

I did this swap last year and it was pretty straight forward. You will want to plan this upgrade carefully if you have other modifications planned, such as headers. For example, you will probably want to go with either a hydraulic clutch or cable clutch mechanism. If you have plans for headers, you will want to go hydraulic. I posted the pictures of my upgrade on my CarDomain site, this might be helpful:

Switching from a 3sp manual to a 5sp manual is a simple bolt in operation. If the 5sp has the same input splice as your 3sp you won't even have to remove the bellhousing (unless you want to replace the clutch disc). Even if you have to shorten your driveline that is no harder than dropping it off at a machine shop with the dimensions you need. Where in Nor Cal are you? I'm near Roseville.

Nice car JCode... Thanks for the advice. I was thinking clutch cable and replacing the headers. The Hooker headers I have now are about 15 years old but the clutch linkage has put some dings in it. I also have a rear seal leak so i will have a lot of work besides the tranny...

Hey PushRod... I am in Elk Grove so I am not that far away... My only concern at this point is what else I am gonna find once I tear everything down. See my privious reply to JCode... I have owned this car since '88 and have only been repairing what breaks because a lot of this car is original...

I love driving her but you know how it goes... Just waiting for the next weakest link to break... I plan to do the suspension after the driveline...

My II is an auto (C4) so I can totally sympathize when it comes to screaming on the highway...

you literally have to shout to talk to the passenger. good luck with the swap Take lot of pics

A little work now and then doesn't hurt if you truly love your car. And it's almost 40 yrs old, so something has to break!
5 gears are better than 3! Good luck!

I think they only way to find out is to have an estimate done... try tranny shops, race shops, mechanics...

i did the t5 swap on my 67 coupe, only real problem i have is i cant really use 5th gear due to the rear end gear ratio, once i go to 355's i think i will actually need 5th

are you going to use the t5 bell housing or your stock bell housing,

i started using the stock bell housing with the adapted and it was hell on my knee, so i later went with the t5 bell housing and with the cnc hydrolic clutch setup and it is much better.

if you can change a clutch then you can do the swap.

few other things to keep in mind, the t5 shifter is farther forward so you will need a different shifter .

make sure you fill the trans , i ran mine low and it fried 3rd and 4th gear syncro's

Thanks guys! I was thinking about using the T-5 housing with a kit which allows it to fit. I was also looking at a hydraulic setup for the clutch. Didn't realize that it required a different shifter... Thanks for the info...
