289 or 302

My wife and I bought a 65 coupe a couple days ago. The place where we bought said it had a 302 in it. Other than looking on the block for the code is there an easy way to see if it is a 302 or maybe if it's a 289? Any help would be great.

Saw this on another forum...

Look at the crankshaft for a stamped number - 1M = 2.87 stroke (289) and 2M = 3.00 stroke (302). As mentioned, the rods need to match the crank unless you've got non-standard pistons. A rod # starting with C3 is a 289 rod, C8=302 rod.

Also, if it was originally an I6, I believe those had a 4 bolt wheel lug pattern. That may need to be upgraded if not already as those spindles may be too weak to be holding up a V8.

Also, I don't know how accurate this is, but I think the '65 289s had a black block with gold valve covers while the later 302 had everything blue. Of course only if that's the original paint. I know someone who painted their 65 289 covers blue... So that's not a guarantee.

You probably have a 302 like mine is. Not really a bad thing.

The 65 didn't have a VIN on the block so there isn't really a "numbers matching" 65 Mustang........
