289,302,351w?
289,302,351w?
I'm new here and just have a? Im not sure what motor I have in my car wither it be the 289,302 is there a definant way to tell It does have a 4bbl Carb on it. And another? If it is a 289 or a 302 will the exaust manifold bolt up to a 351w? I know its kind of a dumb question but I appriciate the responses
Pull a valve cover, usually says on heads. They could be changed though. Should say on block under intake manifold too. The thing is, this also. Oils be changed. The only difference in a 289 and 302 is the crankshaft, it has a bit more stroke. I had late model 302 heads on my 289 at one time and I have seen a 289 that used a late model 302 block with the deleted manual fuel pump mount.
There are casting #'s above the starter on the block but they aren't really proof. some late 289 where built with 302 blocks. a 289 is a 302 with a short stroke . The best way to tell is to pull a head and measure the stroke if you are that concerned.
The 351W exhaust ports would be the same has the 302 but keep in mind the 351 has a taller deck height. A shorty header would bolt up in theory but I'm pretty sure it is going to hug the block pretty tight and cause issues. I have never seen the stock headers used only have seen swap headers used. long tubes from a 302 no.

I have a 68 mustang, I took out the 302 and put in a 351w using the same long tube headers and have no fitment issues, the block is tiller and wider. I have straight pipes I think their might be some difficulties with an x or h pipe.
