Unhappy

i was wondering if anyone knew anything about the GT's of 69. i know they are the last ones until 82, but does anyone know how to identify them or anything special about them? im wondering b/c i saw a 69 coupe for sale that had the GT styled wheels (and an ultra clean 351W ) and before i do my typical teenager thing and ****** it up before i know what im doing im wondering if i could get some more info about the 69 GT, just to be sure it is what i think it is...

thanks to all you guys who know what im talking about (cuz im not sure that i do :hiding: )

69 GTs are rare, since almost everyone who wanted a better Mustang that year got a Mach I. There should be a 69 GT registry or website if you Google it.

aha, took 5 seconds to Google: http://home.comcast.net/~gt69registry/

enjoy

On that site, there is a link to Marti Auto Works. They have all of Fords records from 1967-1973. You can purchase a report that will tell you what options your car had when it was produced. The GT equipment group will show up on their report. I think they require that you show proof that you own the car (but I am not 100% positive on that).

there are only a couple ways to tell a 69 gt, the most important is that it has to have the one year only 69 gt gas cap. it has a gear tooth pattern around the outside edge of the flip down part, gt's also came with the mach 1 style hood scoop and hood pins, the styled steel wheels with the gt center caps and the gt stripe on the rocker panel. if the car has all of this there is a good chance it is a factory GT but the only way to know for sure is to get the marti report

I honestly can not believe that bnickel did not mention this already, but if it has the original hood, then the GT's came with a set of cut outs under the hood scoop that no other 69' mustang would have from the factory. They were originally taped closed when they dropped the functional scoop from the offering but the hole, either taped or untaped should still be there if the hood is original.

It could still be a real GT with a replacement hood, but being a unique part and not available in the aftermarket like most of the other GT options I would say it is one of the more important key items to retain.

I also thought it included the fender lip and trunk lid chrome trim and the front spoiler, but I could be wrong. The min size base v8 was the 351, so you are off to a good start.

sorry i'm getting a bit derelict in my GT duties huh, Pak. i have found that most but not all GT's had this hood from the factory and i think it has more to do with production dat than anything else, when they ran out of hoods that was it.

as far as the trunk trim and the spoiler they were not part of the GT package. the remote drivers side mirror was though, that's one thing i always forget about. this is the chrome remote mirror, you could get the sport mirrors but they were optional as well. you could actually equip a GT exactly like a Mach 1 with the exception of the seat upholstery and the carpet on the interior and the stripes on the exterior. you could even get it with high back seats if you wanted, but it would get the deluxe comfort weave upholstery.

Well you certainly are more of a GT athority than I but try to step up to the plate a little more in the future.

I was going by this cars features, not fact.

When I saw this car on the net 7+ years ago I knew what I wanted, I just couldn't find a decent real GT before finding my car.

What about the rocker panel trim? Was that GT or deluxe ext. add on to?

all of that extra chrome was part of the "exterior decor group"

my car came with the stainless door edge trim and the goofy rubber baby buggy bumper strips which was some kind of package, although i'm not sure what. wish i knew what happened to the stainless trim though, would be nice to put those back on.

wow, thanks for the info guys! this sounds good. it could very well be a GT :w00t:

right now, im kicking myself for not checking the VIN :bang:

oh well, ill go n see it again maybe 2moro. only one thing has been holding me back from totally falling head over heels i for it: the fact that it might be a GT. that fact makes it both wantable (for lack of a better word) because of the rareity and not wantable for the exact same reason. i think the guilt would hit me pretty hard if i did what i want to do to this somewhat rare find (but hey, im not sure yet)

but then again, theres the feeling of owning a uniquie piece of american muscle car history.... grrr... man i hate being indecisive. to tell the truth, i think a plane jane mustang would be better (i could do all the mods i want without any guilt) but.... being able to say "yeah its a gt" would fell sooooo good.

thanks again for all your guys's help. i love this board

it's possible for a gt to have any color interior.

that car is not a gt, unless he removed every piece of GT equipment from it, like the hood scoop and pins, the gt gas cap, etc. call him out on that, just becausee it has the gt hub caps does not make it a gt.

Whoa, don't let a bit of flash get to ya! Not only is it not a GT (at least not likely), it needs a LOT of work--rust is your number one enemy and that car has got its share of the enemy! I'd personally pass and keep looking. You'll be glad you did. JMO

If the Vin were bogus then you can't necessarily go by that either. I would bet that it ain't a real GT either and if it is then the most expensive parts are gone. The car is pretty rough and a "rough non GT coupe" is not the best place to spend the kind of money that car requires, in fact it is about the worst 69' combo you could spend your money on shy of having a 6 cyl engine, completely from an investment standpoint. No car is going to make you rich when you are done but it's nice to recoup some of your cost at least in the end. Don't get attached and walk away unless you get it for practically nothing. There are better cars out there.
