Question 1966 VIN and engine code problems. Help Please

Hello Everyone, I'm new on here and I'm looking for some answers. I may buy this car or not??? Well a co-workers dad passed away and now this 66 Mustang is for sale. The help I need is that the VIN number on the rail next to drivers front fender is 6F08T180437 which should be a straight 6 cyl but the Missouri Title and door tag says its a "C" code 6F08C180437. I call state of MO today and they say that its been titled that way since april 1970. Before and after the VIN number it looks like someone stamped the letter V into the metal and towards the inside of the factory VIN the poorly stamped the "C" Code vin. My co-workes dad has owned this since 76 also. Its been painted black from dark green. Right now I'm looking for answers on these VIN's. Engine tag by the carb says 289 c 66 9 on the first line then 5-H 236-s on the second line on same tag. Any help would be helpful. Thanks Frank

Try finding the "confidential vin". You will need to loosen up the passenger side fender and it should be stamped underneath it. Here is a pic I where it is in my 67, should be roughly in the same spot on a 66:

I've seen the closer to the firewall too.

I'll do that too. Ive seen where people say their is on on each side. I guess sometimes their is a build tag too, where are those commonly bolted onto the car?

My 1970 has it stamped on both sides under the front fenders. It also has a build tag located on the front right of the radiator support.

Thanks everyone, I need to see if I can locate a build tag. That would be great. Another friend has looked at the car and thinks it was a 289 factory car. Any pointers would help. Thanks Frank
