Look at and decode the Engine code and Body code, re: interior. That's all. Even still, back then literally anything could be bought with anything else for Mustang, which was one of it's great selling points, so a plain interior with the K code Hi-Po motor and the 4 speed *could* have been acquired, and nothing would be amiss about it.

Further, the Rotunda fire took out most records regarding the early-to-mid '60s cars, so there's no original proof. Which is why fakes can be made.

Beyond THAT, if it has the 5 lug wheels, disc brakes in front, 289 engine, alternator, deluxe interior with the 5 gauge dash, AND both turn signals work (it's rather important, that), then it's either a GT... or a fake.

There literally isn't any way to actually tell, since all the parts, and even the body vin plates can be reproduced. There's a few places where the VIN was stamped, such as the fender support in the engine bay, and if those don't match the vin plate in the door, that could mean trouble if you're looking to be 'pure.'

/Personally, I'm a restomod guy myself...

I agree with Houtex and Hoss, if its a nice car any you are happy with it, go with it. If its been butched like mine was .... restomod! its fun.
