1965 Gas Gauge Issue

My gas gauge reads "E" even though I have a full tank. This began last year and at times it will go up a little but never to full and now it is stuck on E...any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

most likely the sending unit in the tank .. they wear out with age as the the float arm scrubs up and down against a coil of resistor wires .. thats how the unit knows the depth of the fuel in the tank and sends a signal to the guage .. but check the grounds at the tank and clean off all connections first off ...

For some unknown reason the gauge started to work today. lets see how long it works before I need to replace the sending unit or check the wires etc.

they have been known to stick in place if a vehicle sits for any length of time ...

My 69 was doing something similar - I pulled the float and found it had some tiny holes in it! I have no idea how - maybe just years and years of up and down in thirty years of gas. Replacement fixed.

An easy way to check the sending unit if it stops working again is to disconnect the wire at the sending unit, stick a screwdriver in it and ground it to something on the car while someone watches the gas gauge to see if it moves. If it does but doesn't when it's hooked back up to the tank then the sending unit is no good.
