Ford Used High-Tech Lighting Lab to Design New Mustang

There are the basic design elements of the car’s new cockpit, which feature a number of updated styling elements, but Ford also went to great lengths to reduce those dreadful sunlight glares on the car’s vehicle controls and instrument panels.
With the help the carmaker’s high-tech Visual Performance Evaluation lab also known as the Lighting Lab, Ford engineers recreated a variety of different sunlight conditions indoors during the design process.
“With the Lighting Lab, we can ensure that the first time a buyer sits in the 2015 Ford Mustang, that person will be able to see the interior as the designers originally envisioned it – in the best light possible,” said Mahendra Dassanayake, Ford lighting technical specialist, in a Ford press release.
“Whether the car is parked outside or is sitting on an auto show floor, whether it is a bright, sunny day, or overcast and snowing, the materials and controls in the Mustang will be both visually satisfying and highly functional.”
The Lighting Lab uses a planetarium-like dome to replicate various sunlight conditions, simulating the different phases of the earth’s revolution around the sun. The process also uses additional lights lining the perimeter used to simulate various weather conditions.
