Ford SuperVan Laps Nurburgring Faster Than Mustang GTD, Corvette ZR1/ZR1X
It may be a one-off creation, but the all-electric Ford SuperVan is mind-bogglingly quick around the track, as we can see here.
Earlier the year, The Blue Oval took the Ford Mustang GTD back to the Nurburgring with one goal in mind – lapping that iconic circuit faster than it did late last year. It wasn’t like the GTD really needed to go faster after recording a best lap of 6:57:685, making it one of very few production vehicles to do the deed in less than seven minutes, but it would up doing precisely that with an even-better lap time of 6:52.072. That glory was short-lived after both the C8 Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X bested that time, but now, the one-off Ford SuperVan has taken them all down.
The Ford SuperVan 4.2 is a one-off EV demonstrator that has already claimed a win in the 2024 Pikes Peak Open Division with a time of 8:47.682, which was also a new record for that class by nearly 40 seconds – not to mention good enough for second-place overall. It isn’t terribly surprising given the fact that we are talking about what is essentially a full-blown race car, one with bodywork “inspired” by the road-going Transit Custom, coupled with multiple electric motors churning out 2,000 horsepower.
Thus, the Ford SuperVan 4.2 headed out to Germany recently to see just how quickly the “van” could make its way around the legendary ‘Ring, and the results, well, they were quite impressive. The SuperVan managed to post a best lap time of 6:48.393 with pro driver Romain Dumas behind the wheel, who also happened to pilot the same vehicle up Pikes Peak last year.
That time was enough to take down not only the Mustang GTD, but also, the the Porsche 911 GT3 RS – and perhaps more humorously, the C8 Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X. It was just a couple of weeks ago that GM bragged about the fact that both Corvettes bested the GTD at the ‘Ring with lap times of 6:50.763 for the regular ZR1 and 6:49.275 in the hybrid ZR1X, after all.
In all fairness, the Ford SuperVan isn’t a production vehicle, nor is it road legal like the Corvette duo and the GTD, but it’s still an impressive feat, regardless. After all, it’s hard to imagine a world where – just a few short years ago – we’d see a van of any kind, electric or otherwise, beating up on pricey supercars at any track, let alone one as well-traveled as the Nurburgring.
