Ford Mustang GTD Spirit of America

The Ford Mustang GTD Spirit of America pays homage to a legendary land speed racer and the American spirit, in general.

The Ford Mustang GTD debuted in 2023 as the ultimate pony car, and we mean that quite literally – this is a machine that is not only the most powerful and fastest production Mustang ever built, but also, one of a small handful of cars in general that have lapped the iconic Nurburgring in Germany in less than seven minutes, too. Built in small quantities and slapped with a massive price tag, the GTD is also a boutique offering that will be sold in various special editions, as one might imagine (much like the Ford GT), and now, the latest of the bunch has been revealed – the Ford Mustang GTD Spirit of America.

Land speed racing fans will immediately recognize the Ford Mustang GTD Spirit of America given the fact that it’s the same name that graced the flanks of the racer built by Craig Breedlove, who was a structural engineering tech in the aerospace industry. Breedlove famously purchased a $500 jet engine from a Korean War fighter plane and stuffed it into his land speed racer, then went on to become the first person to break the 500- and 600-mile-per-hour barriers on land during a time when that sport was dominated by wealthy Europeans.

Such is the motivation behind the Ford Mustang Spirit of America – the scrappy nature that also inspired Ford to create the pony car in the first place, not to mention beat the Europeans in various motorsports series over the years. As for the Ford Mustang GTD Spirit of America, it’s designed to pay homage to that and Breedlove, and it does so with a Performance White exterior sporting Race Red and Lightning Blue racing stripes – just like original Mustang tribar and the overalls that Breedlove wore when he was out achieving what no one ever thought he could.

The Ford Mustang GTD Spirit of America also wears exposed carbon fiber parts including the front splitter, rear spoiler, and diffuser, along with Race Red end plates and mirror caps, which can also be spec’d in exposed carbon fiber. Race Red brake calipers are standard, which is also the case with the GTD Performance Package. Inside the cabin, one will find seats that are unique to the Spirit of America, trimmed in leather with Dinamica inserts, plus a Race Red gradient stripe, Re-Entry White trim, Victory Blue contrast stitching, and a 3D-printed titanium IP badge, shift ring, and paddle shifters.

Ford hasn’t revealed pricing or launch info for the Ford Mustang GTD Spirit of America, but since every 2025 GTD has already been spoken for, it’s possible that it could be offered to existing reservation holders, or perhaps it will be added at some point in the future. Either way, it’s a pretty cool way to pay tribute to the people that are “pushing the edge of the envelope and challenging the Goliaths of the day in an all-American way,” as Mustang GTD Brand Manager Jim Owens so eloquently stated.
