Ford Racing Turns Up the Mustang
The new Mustang is about as eagerly awaited as any of the new cars coming out combined and then times two. In other words, people are watching this car’s launch like hawks, and that includes us.
For the new pony car, a performance benchmark is the dragstrip; something maybe diehard Mustang enthusiasts have been worried about since Ford announced that the new ‘Stang would have an independent rear suspension instead of the old solid rear axle. Well, Ford Racing is here to quell those fears.
Ford’s tuning arm threw a few bolt-on parts at three different Mustangs. One GT, without any forced induction ran an 11.77-second quarter-mile. Another with forced induction hit 10.97 seconds. That is unbelievably close to the Hellcat. The king of the group by sheer ridiculousness was the EcoBoost, the runt of the litter. With a few modifications to the subframe, exhaust, ECU and tires, the little Mustang that could ran a 12.56-second quarter-mile.
I probably should explain why I say that the EcoBoost was the king of the group. With few modifications (and those that were done were fairly conservative) this car is running with the likes of Evos and STIs. That’s incredible. What will be even more incredible is when full-fledged tuning shops get their hands on these cars and crank up the boost to 11.
