Ford  unveiled the “Ford Performance Junior Team,” a groundbreaking driver development initiative aimed at nurturing the next generation of motorsport talent. This program will identify and mentor promising drivers from series such as the Mustang Challenge, Mustang Cup, and GT4, guiding them toward fulfilling their racing ambitions and reaching the highest levels of sports car competition.

“At Ford Performance, we are always on the lookout for fresh new racing talent, and with the new Ford Performance Junior Team program, we think we have a great solution for the future,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance Motorsport, in a recent press statement. “This initiative will provide essential tools and support for aspiring racers, enhancing their skills and helping them realize their potential in the competitive world of sports car racing.”

Eligibility & Selection Process

The Junior Team program will evaluate drivers globally from various series, including the Mustang Challenge, Mustang Cup, and Mustang GT4. Key selection criteria will focus on average performance stats compared to leading competitors, current racing performance, feedback from sanctioning bodies, driver temperament, and year-over-year improvement.

Evaluations for the inaugural class of the Ford Performance Junior Team are currently underway and will continue through December. Selected drivers will be contacted and contracted before the official announcement of the inaugural class. Notably, the first driver chosen for the program is Robert Noaker, the 2024 Mustang Challenge Dark Horse Class Champion.

Comprehensive Development & Mentorship

Once selected, drivers will benefit from mentorship by factory Mustang GT3 racing professionals, along with coaching during select race weekends. Ford engineers will also provide simulator sessions to help refine driving skills and maximize track time.

In addition to on-track training, participants will receive regular coaching on the physical and mental demands of professional driving. Training will encompass aspects such as sponsorship development, social media engagement, and participation in Ford-sponsored experiences, ensuring a well-rounded approach to their racing careers.

Pathway to Elite Competition

For the 2025 season, the Ford Performance Junior Team aims to prepare development drivers for advanced competition levels, offering ongoing support throughout the year. Opportunities may also arise for participants to test the Mustang GT4 or GT3 vehicles.

“We have a fantastic team of seasoned drivers, teams, and engineers who are passionate about mentoring the next generation of racers,” said Kevin Groot, Ford Performance Motorsports Sports Car program manager, in a recent press statement. The ultimate goal of the Junior Team program is to cultivate drivers who could secure a seat in the Mustang GT3 Factory Program, the pinnacle of Mustang racing within Ford.

The complete lineup for the inaugural season of the Ford Performance Junior Team will be revealed at the Ford Performance Season Launch event in January 2025.
