Ford Performance Z2363 Crate Engine

With a feisty 507 horsepower straight out of the box, Ford Performance’s race-ready motor will ruin your opponent’s day.

There’s a pesky little saying out there that some folks truly enjoy to throw around, especially when it comes to the drag racing scene: “Built not Bought.” While many Mustang owners out there can back up such a claim, there are others who, well…not so much.

If you’re looking to add “Built not Bought” to your Mustang Source forum profile, then perhaps you can begin with Ford Performance’s new catalog addition, the Z2363. This is a 363 cubic inch crate engine, which is based on a 302 small-block Ford Boss motor.

According to the Ford Performance online catalog, this bad boy produces an astonishing 500 horsepower at 6,500 rpm straight out of the crate, as well as 450 lb.-ft. torque at 5,100 rpm. Depending on your specific needs, the Z2363 can be had in front or rear sump configuration, especially if your Mustang project car is a fairly recent model.

Other vital specs:

  • Bore x stroke (in): 4.125″ bore x 3.400″ stroke
  • Block: Boss 302 8.2 deck M-6010-BOSS 302
  • Crankshaft: SCAT Forged Steel
  • Connecting rods: SCAT forged steel I-beam connecting rods and ARP bolts
  • Pistons: Forged Mahle® w/ floating wrist pins
  • Camshaft type: Hydraulic Roller
  • Cylinder Heads Ford Performance Aluminum “Z2” Cylinder Heads M-6049-Z2
  • Compression ratio: 10.2:1 (nominal)
  • Valve covers: “Ford Racing” cast aluminum-black 302-135

If you’re unsure about what makes this specific engine a better option than others, the answer depends on what is expected from the motor, and what kind of reliability is desired. If you’re currently maxing out a 302 Boss block at 349 cubic inches, this is the most logical step up.

And before you order your $2.99 “Built not Bought” sticker, keep in mind this package will set you back $10,650 bucks.
