Track-focused Mustang strives to break 7-minute cap with 815 hp, Formula 1-inspired aerodynamics and multimatic suspension.

Ford is determined to break the seven-minute barrier at Germany’s famed Nürburgring racetrack with the Mustang GTD. This is a feat achieved by only a few high-end exotics, none of which have been from a North American brand. The mission has been in motion for the past year as Mustang GTDs have undergone rigorous testing at the ‘Ring.

Ford has confirmed that an official lap time has been set, though the details have yet to be revealed. It’s expected that the Mustang GTD has hit the under-seven-minute mark. To capture the excitement of this historic attempt, a short film is in the works, with a trailer set for release on October 23.

Ultimate Track-Focused Mustang

The Mustang GTD is more than just a high-performance car; it’s a culmination of Ford’s decades of racing expertise. Although designed for the track, the GTD is street-legal, making it a unique hybrid between race car and road car. Its advanced suspension system, featuring Multimatic’s Adaptive Spool Valve (ASV) dampers, ensures the GTD maintains a balance of stiffness for racing while being comfortable enough for everyday driving.

Ford’s engineers have also integrated active aerodynamics into the GTD, including a Drag Reduction System (DRS) similar to those found in Formula 1 cars. This feature allows for increased speed on straightaways while maintaining optimal downforce through corners.

Power & Performance

At the heart of the Mustang GTD is a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine, delivering a crazy 815 horsepower. Derived from the Mustang Shelby GT500, the Predator engine has been enhanced with new elements, such as dry-sump lubrication and a titanium exhaust. These improvements allow the engine to reach a maximum speed of 7,650 rpm, with a smaller supercharger pulley contributing to the power boost.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which is mounted at the rear for improved weight distribution. The result is a top speed of 202 mph, making the Mustang GTD a formidable presence on the track.

Limited Production & Availability

Ford is offering the Mustang GTD for the 2025 and 2026 model years. While production beyond those years hasn’t been confirmed, the initial application process for the North American market has already closed, with over 7,500 applications received. Prices are expected to start around $325,000, making the Mustang GTD a serious contender in the world of high-performance supercars.
